Why You’ll Love Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar
Although it’s pretty much agreed that all chocolate is delicious, not all chocolate is created equal. Alter Eco Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar is single origin, meaning the beans used to make the finished product come from only one location. This allows the intricacies and unique notes to that region to truly stand out and make a statement.
Alter Eco Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar has an earthy, toffee-filled scent and an irresistible creamy texture, which is unusual for an 85% cocoa bar. There’s no competition when it comes to the taste—a rich, deep cocoa with hints of floral, cherry, and coffee flavors is the perfect way to indulge and satisfy your desire for something sweet.
How chocolate is made
Cocoa and cacao are often used interchangeably, and while they’re related, they’re not identical. Cacao pods grow on trees in areas like Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, and other places with warm, tropical climates. When these pods get cracked open, there’s a seed inside that looks similar to a coffee bean—that’s the cacao bean. Raw, it tastes like an incredibly bitter type of chocolate, but when it gets processed it creates a chocolate product like cocoa powder. There are a few different steps to manufacturing a chocolate bar, and even the smallest variations can greatly affect the finished product, just as the geographic location influences the taste.
First, when the beans are removed from the trees, they are left out to ferment and dry in the climate where they have been growing. This process plays a big part in what the final flavor of the chocolate bar will be like, because when it dries—it locks in those notes. At this stage the beans are a bit more stable and retain more flavor, in which they are then transported to the manufacturer from the cacao plantation.
Once they’ve arrived at the manufacturing site, they get cleaned. While some bars may mix beans of different origins to create a particular flavor, Alter Eco Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar uses single origin beans only. These cocao beans then get roasted at a specific temperature in order remove moisture and intensify the flavor even more.
The process is almost done when the nibs inside of the cacao beans are removed and liquefied. At this point, additional ingredients may be added to create a certain texture and flavor (such as sugars or milk). Once everything is mixed together, it’s then heated and put into a chocolate bar mold to dry. Alter Eco Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar is made just like this and contains only cacao beans, cocoa butter, raw cane sugar, and vanilla beans. This ensures you get intense chocolatey flavor (with 85% cocoa!) and satisfy those sweet tooth cravings, all while reaping the health benefits cacao offers.
The health benefits of cacao
Yes, there are actually health benefits to eating chocolate. But before you rush out to buy every chocolatey goodie in sight, understand how you can benefit most from this treat. Alter Eco Dark Blackout Organic Chocolate Bar can boost your health a bit since its first ingredient is organic cacao beans, which has a number of nutrients:
- Protein, which is often called the building block of the body. It builds and repairs tissue like hair, nails, bones, muscles, cartilage, and blood. Protein also gives you a bit of an energy boost and makes you feel full for longer.
- Calcium, a mineral that’s associated with creating strong, healthy bones for anyone who remembers those “Got Milk?” commercials. It also works to help nerves send their messages to the rest of the body, and muscles to contract.
- Carotene, which converts to vitamin A inside the human body. It is vital for good eye health and good vision, and it also contributes to a hearty, responsive immune system, and healthy mucous membranes.
- Riboflavin, one of eight important B vitamins—B2, to be exact. B vitamins are known for the wonders they work for your blood, helping give the body energy and fuel people every day. When blood is in optimal health and full of oxygen, it makes you feel energized. B2 is especially important because is an antioxidant, protecting the body from free-radical damage and lowering cancer, heart disease, and chronic illness risks.
- Magnesium, which is found in every cell in the human body. It is especially known for its anti-inflammatory properties and helps in biochemical reactions performed by enzymes, providing energy.
- Flavonoids, a fantastic nutrient better blood and heart health. They have been proven to help lower blood pressure and improve overall blood flow to the heart and brain, as well as prevent clots.
- Antioxidants, which prohibit the oxidation of other molecules in the body. Over time, free radicals can cause damage to the body, and antioxidants fight against this. Although these are mostly found in fresh fruits and vegetables, cacao actually has more than most produce options!

Best chocolate ever!
Love the smooth rich flavor I get from this brand of chocolate! I love their truffles also they are way better than Lindt. Theo and Eco are my go to when the chocolate cravings come knocking!
Dancing in the Dark
At 24 cents less a bar than Green & Black's and tastier (and also Fair Trade!), this one's a keeper for me. I wouldn't pay $3.99 a bar for it, though.
My favorite chocolate bar
Alter Eco is my favorite because it's fair trade, and doesn't have many ingredients. Most importantly, not emulsifiers and is low in sugar. My go-to chocolate bar. P.S. The price here on thrive is better than anywhere else I've ever seen!
A little dry but perfectly bitter
I love Alter Eco chocolate bars, because they do not use emulsifiers as thickeners, which I avoid in my diet. I've tried a variety of their flavors, and I'm a huge mega-dark chocolate bar lover. This one has great bitter flavor but is a bit dry (which I expect, but it's a bit drier than I prefer). Still a great product.
Strong bitter aftertaste
This is 1 of 3 (the other two are Chocolove Almonds & Sea Salt Dark Chocolate and Chocolove Cherries & Almonds Dark Chocolate) chocolate bars that I've recently purchased, and so far this is my least favorite. This bar isn't that sweet at all, and has a strong bitter aftertaste. I seriously doubt that I'll buy this one again.
High in fiber!
I was driven to this dark chocolate for the fruity intensity stated on the packaging. Although I completely missed those tones, I did find this particular chocolate to give off a sweeter and creamier flavor than other 85% cocoa chocolates. It's different and like that it is high in fiber. However, it was not was I was expecting.

Dark Chocolate Awesomeness!
Dark Chocolates are my favorite! I live in an area where they do not have very many health food stores so I love buying things online. Thrive has an endless supply of sweet things which is good and bad. This chocolate is organic, fair trade and non-GMO. Can your Snickers bar say that?
What I was a little weirded out by was that it was hot in Arizona this month and the chocolate was coming from Indiana. I was happy to see ice packs in my order but feel it might be a little over the top. After contact customer service, they told me they are phasing them out- I was happy to hear that.

Best dark chocolate!
If you love dark chocolate this is a must try! If you don't love dark chocolate, I still think it's a must try! It is no where near as bitter as I was expecting given it's 85% cocoa content but it really isn't! Let it melt in your mouth and you will be in heaven! Plus, it doesn't hurt that there are added health benefits to an already delicious tasting treat! Definitely try!

This was pretty good, though not the best dark chocolate I've had. I love that they adhere to so many values, so I would continue buying them over some of the more-oft seen brands at the supermarket. Great product!
My new favorite chocolate
This chocolate is so good; rich, creamy, great consistency and wonderful aftertaste.
One of my all-time favorite darks.
This is my favorite super-dark chocolate. It's smooth and has those fruity notes, which I find is common with high quality and high cocoa content chocolates. It is intense, but so good.
