Although many of today’s most popular household cleaners still contain potentially harmful ingredients, there are lots of brands offering natural and eco-friendly solutions. But in the early 1980s, non-toxic options were harder to come by. ECover saw a gap in the marketplace and decided to create the world’s first phosphate-free laundry detergent that was powered by Mother Nature, proving it was still possible to clean your clothes, naturally.
ECover started in 1980, when a group of “scientists with a conscience”—as they like to call themselves—decided toxins didn’t belong inside bottles of household cleaners. Not only are they potentially harmful to our bodies, but toxins can also pollute waterways and destroy wildlife. So in a small garden shed in rural Belgium, ECover created its first product: phosphate-free laundry detergent. Today, the brand is a Certified B Corporation with eco-friendly factories in both Belgium and France, offices in San Francisco, and a manufacturing facility in Chicago that’s on track to become the first LEED Platinum-Certified plant in the industry. The company currently has 35 products available for purchase in more than 40 countries.
“Science inspired by nature” is the ECover motto. They believe humans should leave the world better than they found it, and have several business practices in place to help achieve this. One example is carbon footprint measurement, which the company does for almost every aspect of the business including packaging, ingredient production, and office energy usage. Once those baselines are established, the company then seeks to make improvements.
ECover offers 35 products to naturally clean your home. The brand not only puts the good stuff—like biodegradable and plant-based cleaning agents—inside its formulas, but it also takes active steps to be a green company and minimize its impact on the environment. ECover scientists have found that the natural fermentation process can turn sugars and alcohols into solvents, dissolving oils and stains without using conventional, high-heat practices that produce synthetic ingredients. They also use a fermenting process to develop unique packaging made with a proprietary plant-sourced plastic sourced from sugarcane, which is fermented, distilled, and dehydrated before being transformed into the bottles you bring home.
