Garden of Eatin' was founded by Al Jacobson in 1971, and can be seen as one of the innovators of mass-produced organic food products. The company's initial offering was an organic whole-wheat pita bread, but it branched out in the mid-1980s when Jacobson bought a few tons of organic blue corn.
