Maya Kaimal
REFINE BY
Indian food is known for having layered and complex flavors that you can only get by simmering ingredients for hours and keeping an array of spices on hand. It’s not exactly a recipe for easy weeknight cooking. But Indian food doesn’t have to be complicated, especially when you can reach for authentic simmer sauces, dals, and snacks to turn dinner into something extra special. Maya Kaimal’s love of food started at an early age, and today she’s sharing that passion with the masses. Raised in Boston by an Indian father and an American mother, Maya Kaimal’s love of food began early. During college she cooked for her friends, then co-workers in New York City where she worked as a magazine photo editor. Her first cookbook, Curried Flavors: Family Recipes from South India, won the Julia Child Award for best first book, and her second book, Savoring the Spice Coast of India: Fresh Flavors from Kerala, focuses on regional recipes from South India, where her father was raised. Kaimal has been a guest on the Today Show, Food Network, and Martha Stewart, and she’s written for numerous publications—all in an effort to help make Indian cooking accessible in home kitchens.
The History of Maya Kaimal
Kaimal and her husband launched Maya Kaimal Fine Indian Foods in 2003 out of their Brooklyn apartment. After having twins, the family relocated to upstate New York, where they’ve run their business together ever since. Over the years, the company has received accolades and awards for its shelf-stable simmer sauces, dals, and refrigerated sauces.
