Numi Tea
According to Tea USA, Americans consumed more than 84 billion servings of tea in 2018, with black tea and green tea varieties being the most popular. These two types of tea come from the same plant—an evergreen shrub known as camellia sinensis, aka the “tea tree.” The difference, though, is in the amount of oxidation the leaves experience. Black tea is exposed to the elements longer, resulting in dark-colored leaves (and bolder flavors). Green tea, on the other hand, is picked sooner to preserve its fresher, often grassier flavor. But no matter your preference, it’s pretty clear that tea is here to stay. That’s why we offer blends from the best tea companies around that support organic, fair trade, and sustainable practices.
The History of Numi Tea
During a family vacation to the Grand Canyon, brother and sister Ahmed Rahim and Reem Rahim casually talked about starting a tea business. Until this point, Ahmed had been operating teahouses in Europe, and Reem had been studying art in California, so an opportunity to combine both of their passions was intriguing. In 1999, Numi Organic Tea started out of a small apartment in Oakland, California. The company was named after the Middle Eastern dried lime tea the siblings remember drinking as children growing up in Iraq (numi means “citrus” in Arabic). This tea was traditionally harvested, dried under the desert sun, and then steeped in hot water.
Numi Tea Company Mission
Numi believes tea is an artform, and works to inspire alignment in mind, body, and spirit through this unique and beloved beverage. The brand’s priority is bringing you premium organic and fair trade varieties to suit your every mood, which means traveling to remote regions of the world— in places like India, China, and South Africa—to build partnerships with farmers and learning about their unique cultures.
Benefits of Numi Tea
Pure, organic tea is Numi in a nutshell. Here are some of the benefits you can look forward to when you dunk a Numi tea bag into your mug.
- Real ingredients: Nothing artificial here. Organic teas and herbs are blended with real fruits, flowers, and spices for authentic flavor without using “natural” or artificial ingredients or fragrances.
- Full-leaf quality: Numi’s tea bags are made from a compostable paper filter tea bag that’s made without GMO corn or petroleum-based plastic. And because of the high quality of the leaves, its teas steep slowly and evenly for the richest flavor.
- Organic: All of Numi’s teas are organic. Because no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or insecticides are used, fewer pollutants go into the earth, and the health of farmers and workers is also protected.
