No matter what diet or food lifestyle you’re into, getting adequate protein is always a good idea. For our bodies to function properly, this macronutrient is an absolute essential. One of the ways protein is so powerful is that it breaks down into amino acids, which in turn, help with everything from keeping our organs healthy to building muscle mass. They can even repair cells. In total, there are 20 amino acids that can combine in a variety of ways to make every single type of protein in the body. It’s all very scientific, but here are the two categories to remember. First, there are essential amino acids, and nine of them fall into this category. Since the body can’t make them, that’s where our diet comes into play. Second, there are nonessential amino acids (11 in total), which the body makes as proteins break down. If you’re looking to add more protein, there are lots of ways to do it—you can start by trying some of the bars from Square Organics.
The History of Square Organics
Like many food brands, Square Organics got its start as a one-woman show. Before launching a line of protein bars, founder Sarah Gordon was an active teenager participating in sports year-round. But by her early twenties, asthma flare-ups made it difficult to compete. She ended up on several types of medication and even ended up in the emergency room. A nurse recommended Dr. Mark Hyman’s Book Ultraprevention, which inspired Gordon to experiment with an elimination diet. After six months, Gordon was able to stop taking medication and doesn’t even keep an inhaler in the house these days. The story has a happy ending, but her new food reality —especially in the snack department—was tough to transition to, especially when there weren’t many options on the shelves that were made without gluten, dairy, processed sugar, and soy. After experimenting in her own kitchen, Square Organics was born.
Square Organics Company Mission
Square Organics wants to fill you up without weighing you down. The brand is proud to offer a line of protein bars that it believes “doesn’t taste like protein bars,” and flavor isn’t even the best part. Everything in the line is gluten-free, vegan, and made without artificial sweeteners. The brand also gives back by supporting Not for Sale, an anti-human trafficking nonprofit, and donates 1 percent of its net sales to the organization annually.
Benefits of Square Organics
All Square Organics products are gluten-free and certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization. The brand follows a long list of strict protocols to ensure cross-contamination doesn’t occur, and all the bars are made in a gluten-free facility that undergoes regular testing. You’ll also find alternative sweeteners like organic coconut nectar standing in for conventional sugar, plus plenty of whole grains like rolled oats, sprouted brown rice, and amaranth. On the chocolate front, this ingredient is responsibly sourced in Peru and certified organic. And if you’re in search of low-FODMAP foods, Square Organics offers seven flavors that comply, like Chocolate Coated Crunch and Vanilla Peanut Butter Crispy.
