Tour Des Gendres
France’s Bergerac wine region has flown under the radar for many years, but it’s a goldmine of delicious wines, most notably Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. This area is located in Southwest France, stretching along the Dordogne river, and despite the region’s long history of winemaking (grapes have grown in the area for more than one thousand years), it’s been less popular than neighboring Bordeaux. The topography is hilly, and the soils vary between limestone and clay, depending on where you are. As for the climate, Wine Folly notes an “Atlantic influence,” with slightly warmer temperatures than Bordeaux. Our Master Sommelier didn’t want you to miss out on what this region has to offer, and has chosen two blends that’ll be right at home on your table.
The History of Tour des Gendres
The vineyards of Tour des Gendres are planted on an estate that dates back to the 12th century, and managed by a single family since 1925, when Vincenzo de Conti settled in France with his family. In 1956, de Conti’s son Primo took over the winery, and a family cousin, Francis de Conti, joined the business in 1990, bringing 50 acres along with him from the nearby Saint Julien d’Eymet and Grand Caillou areas.
Tour des Gendres Company Mission
The family behind Tour des Gendres are a bunch of innovative and determined winemakers, who eagerly work with local varietals like Muscadelle à Petits Grains and Malbec, which have grown in the region for hundreds of years. The vineyard works with grapes naturally, farms organically, and believes in allowing the terroir of each grape to shine.
Benefits of Tour des Gendres
Tour des Gendres puts its confidence in nature to work without our constant intervention. Several red and white varietals are cultivated, and the winemakers work to honor the terroir of each grape through both single varietal bottles and unique blends. Each year’s yield depends on the soil and environmental factors present from season to season, and in the wine cellar, the team works closely to allow the full expression of a wine to shine.
