Decades ago, fruit leathers were often filled with questionable ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup. That’s why it’s especially exciting to see how a favorite childhood snack has come full circle, transforming into a more wholesome treat you won’t hesitate to give to your family. Most of the brands we stock take a fruit-forward approach, filling their fruit leathers with fruit purees and relying on the natural sweetness from the fruit itself rather than including added sugars. Another thing we’re excited about? Flavor upgrades. Tropical combos like pineapple and passionfruit or strawberry and banana make these snacks even more appealing.
DIY Strawberry Fruit Leather
We know how easy it is to grab a box of your favorite fruit leather and call it a day. But if you’re looking for a fun DIY project to do with your kids, try making a batch from scratch! Our blog has an easy recipe for Strawberry Fruit Leather that only uses two simple ingredients.
- 5 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons raw honey
- Preheat oven to 115°F or the lowest temperature. Line a baking sheet with a Silpat mat or with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Place strawberries in a large pot set over medium heat and stir occasionally until the juices are released. Cook about 5 minutes more to reduce the mixture slightly. Stir in honey. Transfer to a heatproof blender or food processor fitted with the blade attachment and process until smooth. Spread in an even, thin rectangle on prepared baking sheet, leaving about ½ inch on all sides.
- Bake for 3 to 8 hours until mixture is no longer sticky to the touch. A higher baking temperature will result in a faster cooking time. Let cool completely on baking sheet, peel fruit leather from parchment paper and cut into long, thin strips. Store covered in a cool, dry place.
