Ask any cook and they’ll likely tell you that one of the best ways to add flavor is by loading your dishes with herbs. Every global cuisine has its favorites, and part of the fun of cooking is discovering new ways to use them. Take Italian food as an example: You’ll find oregano, bay leaves, parsley, basil, sage, thyme, and rosemary in all sorts of dishes like roasted meats, pastas, antipasti platters, salads, and stews. In Thai cooking, holy basil, lemon basil, mint, and coriander root are popular must-haves in papaya salad, pad thai, curries, and stews. And because we eat with our eyes first, scattering herbs over the tops of dishes always makes them look extra appealing.

    How to Grow Herbs

As long as you have a space of any size that receives ample sunlight, you can grow herbs. Each plant is different in terms of how much space you’ll need. For example, cilantro, dill, parsley, and chives need about one square foot, while rosemary, mint, sage, and oregano need anywhere between three and four feet to roam. To prepare your soil (either in a container or a large bed) start by loosening the soil with a garden fork. This step will help encourage water to drain throughout the roots. To avoid overwatering (a common problem!) use this method: Insert one finger into the soil, up to your knuckle. If it’s dry, your plant needs water.

    Top Herb Seeds Brands

When it comes to herb seeds for your garden, these two brands are the ones to know.

    Seeds of Change

Seeds of Change started small by selling seed packs to farmers and gardeners, then grew into a food company offering go-to grains like basmati rice and quinoa. The brand is big on giving back, too. One percent of every sale is donated to organizations that are working to improve sustainability in our food system.

    Back to the Roots

Back to the Roots was started by two friends in 2009 who decided to leave their day jobs to become mushroom farmers. From kids to adults, this company makes it easy for anyone to garden, right in their own kitchen with simple garden kits you can set up right out of the box.

Seeds of Change Genovese Basil Seeds

If you’re a lover of Italian food (and who isn’t?) don’t miss the chance to grow your own basil for pastas, salads, and pesto. Plan accordingly—these seeds take 70 days to harvest.

Back to the Roots Kitchen Herb Garden in a Can Kit

Start indoors with your very own garden kit. Just set each can in a sunlit window sill to grow cilantro, basil, and mint. The best part? The kit comes with everything you need.
