So excited

Ive made kombucha before with a SCOBY from a friend. Im looking forward to trying this out. Instructions seem pretty simple.

- katherine

</use>

I made it!

I am very happy about the result. Kombucha I made was very heavy taste of tea but very smooth and my family love it. Follow the instruction, be patient. You will enjoy it as much as I do.

- MJ

</use>

Ok

Not really sure that this worked

- Candice

</use>

Will buy again!

Fun DIY

- Natalie

</use>

Didn't get a chance to try it...

I had no success raising my culture because it grew some moldy spots and I was afraid to use if....hopefully others have had success!

- Katy

</use>

Inactive. Tried twice, never worked.

Tried twice, one from Thrive and one straight from the company. Neither one worked. I finally bought starter from KombuchaKamp and within two days, it was active and forming a new Scoby. I would have given this zero stars if it were possible. After doing more research, found my site and books that state to never buy a dehydrated Scoby, now I understand why. Too bad, because the water kefir and milk kefir from this company work really well.

- LEE

</use>

Disappointed

Disappointed that this is a dehydrated scoby. I was expecting a live culture. Don’t know if I’m even going to attempt to use it based on this information, and the previous reviews..

- Mataya

</use>

We will see

My scoby successfully grew after 30 days- Now waiting to see how the kombucha tea itself turns out and how this tastes mixed with various juices, ginger, etc.

- Sarah Phillips

</use>

Excited to try

Appears to be a good product. Hydrating it now to make kombucha

- Mallori

</use>

Get one from a friend

It is best to get a scoby from a friend! These have a propensity to grow mold!

- Amber

</use>

Go juice

I was too scared to actually drink this.

- Daniel

</use>

We had trouble getting this to start

Unsure if this didn’t work well because we had it shipped to Arizona or if it was a poor products

- KristyAnn

</use>

Trying to brew our own

Once I realized how easy it was to make your own kombucha, I realized it’s almost criminal to charge $5/bottle! We’re excited to try and this should make it easy (barring user error).

- Ashley

</use>

- Alexandra

</use>

Good

Worked well to start making my own kombucha.

- Trudi

</use>

Gave as a gift

Our recipient was very excited to receive this, he had a mold disaster last time!

- Melissa

</use>

Very easy to use

I loved having my scoby! It lived for quite a while. It got neglected (completely my fault) and died but when I followed the instructions it was thriving. I plan on ordering it again

- Mallory

</use>

Just ok

These are super easy to use. I still prefer a hydrated culture rather than starting from a dehydrated. Maybe I did something wrong but it didn’t work very well for me.

- Kristen

</use>

Happy Brewing

</use>

Takes time

Just takes a little time to soak and reawaken, works well after that

- Mara

</use>

Haven’t used

I haven’t actually made this yet because it seemed like a lot of work

Kombucha Tea Starter Culture

I've bought this twice. The scoby dies after about 3 months and it doesn't produce a new scoby like the instructions mention. It's better to buy an activated scoby.

- Susan Schoellkopf

</use>

Ok

Feeling Healthy

My first round with using the culture didn’t go so well. I decided to give it another try and it’s a success! It’s nice to not have to spend so much on individual purchases at the grocery store.

Kombucha starter kit

I followed all the directions completely and never missed a day. My scoby molded. The company said I could send it back for an exchange but I decided it was too much work.

When I got this scoby I thought it was going to be a live scoby I could start using immediately. I did not realize it was dehydrated. But after allowing it to rehydrate for 30 days it has been producing nice kombucha.

My own kombucha

Mine unfortunately did not workout so well. I think most impart on my end of not taking care of the starter correctly. But still bummed it didn’t work. Love the idea and hope it works for others.

We followed the instructions exactly and it didn’t work at all. I definitely wouldn’t buy this again. I’ve also heard other people say their other kits don’t work either.

Waited the entire month to ferment as instructed. No go, scoby dead. This was a waste of $. Sticking with water kefir, has more diverse gut biome. Do NOT buy!

Don't buy

I received this product for free when I first signed up for Thrive a few years ago. I followed all the directions (for two months), but it did not work. I didn't get any mold, but the tea didn't ferment or grow a baby scoby. After doing some research, I learned that dehydrated scobys almost never work because most of the bacteria has been killed off in the dehydration process. After this, I bought a live scoby and have been successfully brewing kombucha for three years now. Every batch should grow a baby scoby if the culture is healthy.

Works Great!

The first time I used this dehydrated scoby was my first time, and I ended up ruining it (mold), but I learned a lot. I bought another, and this time it's working great! I followed the directions to a 'T' on the box, hydrating the scoby first, and then I started making quart batches. I still don't have a baby scoby, so my batches are staying at a quart. I've been getting 2 quarts of kombucha a month. 1 quart every 2 weeks. The first batch, I used black tea bags, but the batches after that, I've been using my favorite green tea, and it's working very well. Just follow the directions as they are stated in the sheet that comes with the dehydrated scoby, and you'll be good!

Tried twice, no success

I tried this twice with it much success. I followed directions to a T, as soon as I quit adding vinegar to my batches I got mold. Customer service was nice in that they sent me a replacement the first time. Second time I added vinegar longer than recommended but still mold first batch without. So I babied these for months and all I got was vinegar tea. I had better success with their water kefir.

Had to rehydrate, but it works just fine

I've been making home made kombucha at home for the last three years and am a bit of a culture collector. One thing I've learned is that with kombucha, patience is a virtue. Things can go weird or wrong, but they can always (well, almost always be fixed). This was my first foray into using a dehydrated scoby. At first I was a bit skeptical if it would work. I followed the directions on the package and waited. Within a few weeks I had a new scoby growing on my first batch and have had more scobys grow with each subsequent batch. I purchased this dehydrated scoby out of curiosity how it would make by finished buch taste. It's not my favorite, it's a little more dry than I'm used to but as far as a thriving culture it keeps growing and growing and producing fizzy buch.

Did not work

I bought 3 packs to make sure if one did not work I had enough to try again. I talked with friends who had brewed at home, I spoke with people who had started dehydrated scobys and knew it would likely not take on the first try, or that it would take an extra long time, I read books & watched videos and I talked to a gal at a health food store who coordinates fresh scoby & kombucha starter for local people as my extra backup (what I ended up doing). My first round smelled foul and molded. My second took 2 months and dried up. My third one never took after a month and a half (I started it at the same time as the second batch). It was a very discouraging experience. I now have 2 fresh scobys from locals (they are grown first by other people and given to me with starter liquid) & it has been joyously easy! I would NOT recommend dehydrated.

I didn't realize it takes a month for the scoby to hydrate.

I went ahead and am hydrating it, it's in a quart jar, but then ordered a live scoby so I could use right away. Have made two batches with that live culture scoby, and have another 2 1/2 weeks to still wait for the dehydrated one to hydrate.

Make your own scoby!

I bought 2 of these kits. They both failed. I then bought a bottle of fresh, unflavored kombucha, let it sit in a jar for 7 days and voila! I had my own fresh scoby. That was 3 months ago, and I've made about 4-5 gallons of kombucha thus far and have so many scobies I give them away to friends. Don't waste your money on this kit.
