About This Brand

Jovial Foods, Inc. was founded by a husband and wife team who has always been passionate about food, farming and traditions. Carla and Rodolfo met in the 1980’s in Bologna, where she was spending a year abroad studying Italian and he was studying agriculture. Both were born into family of talented home cooks, he in Italy and she in New England, and food was at the center of their childhoods. Carla and Rodolfo discovered that their young daughter’s asthma, stomach disturbances, mood swings, chronic sinusitis and excessive hair loss was caused by her body’s sensitivity to modern wheat. They both were professionals in the organic food industry, but they realized they needed to go beyond organic. Their focus shifted to creating high-quality gluten free foods for their family. They were not only looking for great tasting, gluten free foods processed without allergens, they also wanted their daughter’s food to be made with the best certified organic ingredients. Carla and Rodolfo soon...

Why You’ll Love Brown Rice Penne Rigate

Penne is a traditional style of pasta with a cylindrical, hollow shape that comes in two varieties; penne lisce, which has a smooth exterior, and penne rigate, which has “furrows” or ridges that help it hold hearty sauces. While it has historically been made with white flour, there are recently more varieties made with whole grains and gluten free grains on the market. No matter what your dietary needs or taste preference is, there are plenty of delicious options to choose from, like Jovial Brown Rice Penne.

Jovial’s Brown Rice Penne is a fantastic choice for anyone sensitive to wheat or gluten, or for those who just want to add more fiber to their diet. Made from the family founded and operated Jovial Foods, Inc., these noodles are made entirely of 100 percent organic brown rice and water. Cooked in the traditional ‘al dente’ fashion, Jovial’s Brown Rice Penne has great texture, and is versatile enough to be used year round in classic Italian dishes, adapted for modern flavors, or chilled for pasta salads. Each serving contains 210 calories, 2 grams of fat, and 5 grams of protein, plus a serving of whole grains—making it not only a tasty comfort food, but a healthy addition to any diet.

Health Benefits of Brown Rice

High in Fiber: Brown rice contains 3.5 grams of fiber per serving while white rice has about .5 grams for the same portion size. A diet rich in fiber promotes heart health and proper digestion, and helps to protect the body from diseases. The fiber in brown rice helps to keep blood sugar levels consistent, allowing people to enjoy their carbs while avoiding the energy spikes “carb crashes” associated with refined carbohydrates like white rice.

Gluten-Free: Brown rice products such as Jovial Brown Rice Penne are 100 percent gluten-free, making them a great food choice for anyone suffering from gluten sensitivities, celiac disease, fighting off a yeast (candida) overgrowth in their intestines, or trying to manage inflammation in their body.

Whole Grain: The refining process used for white rice, white flour, and other similar products removes the bran and the germ from each grain, which ultimately means a loss of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. In fact, manufacturers often add them back into their foods, which accounts for labels like “enriched flour” on grocery store shelves. In whole grains like this, those benefits are naturally still intact. For adults, the USDA recommends three to seven servings of whole grains per dayas part of an optimal diet plan.

High in Nutrients: Brown rice is rich in magnesium, selenium, phosphorus, and niacin, and B6, among other vitamins and minerals. One cup also contains nearly 90 percent of a day’s allowance of manganese, which assists the body’s metabolic functions and bone health.

Protects Against Neurodegenerative disorders: Research suggests that brown rice helps to keep neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and dementia at bay, largely due to its high levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Keeps Hearts Healthy: The high levels of fiber, selenium, and other nutrients and minerals naturally found in brown rice help promote good cardiovascular health, reducing the risks of stroke, hypertension, and other vascular disease. Additionally, selenium promotes improved thyroid function.

Antioxidants: Brown rice contains high levels of antioxidants which protect the body against free radical damage and may reduce the risks of heart disease.

Healthy Bones: Organic brown rice contains high levels of magnesium and manganese, which, along with calcium, are the body’s best defenders against degenerative bone conditions such as osteoporosis.

Brown Rice Penne Rigate with Sun Dried Tomato Pesto and Parmesan

Jovial Brown Rice Pennegoes well with traditional Italian flavors such as tomato and olive oil. Cook your penne per the instructions on the box before tossing it with ½ cup of Santini’s Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto and a splash or two of your favorite olive oil, such as Thrive's own Organic Olive Oil. Serve with fresh grated parmesan cheese and crushed red pepper at the table.

Oven-Baked Penne

Not many dishes are as comforting as a bowl of hot, cheesy pasta right from the oven. Spray a baking pan with olive oil, toss your cooked penne pasta with a delicious pasta sauce, such as our very own Thrive Market Organic Marinara, cover with mozzarella cheese, and bake at 300 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Penne with Roasted Garlic, Tomato, and Spinach.

Wash, dry, and chop a pint of cherry tomatoes and 4 cups of fresh spinach. Saute with olive oil and a tablespoon of chopped garlic , then toss with cooked penne, Celtic sea salt, and black pepper.

More about Jovial Foods

Jovial Foods, Inc., was founded by husband and wife team Carla and Rodolfo in response to their daughter’s many health struggles, which they discovered was linked to a sensitivity to modern wheat. With Jovial Foods, the couple aimed to create high quality, gluten-free products based on ancient grains (such as einkorn, a.k.a. “nature’s original wheat”) and other traditional methods. Today their brand includes a variety of wheat free and einkorn flours, cookies, and pastas as well as beans, olive oils, and sauces made from ingredients off their farm.
