About This Brand

In 1980, actor Paul Newman and writer A.E. Hotchner gave their friends and neighbors a special holiday gift; homemade salad dressing packaged in wine bottles with parchment paper labels. The reaction was extremely positive that Newman and Hotchner decided to form a company to bring their salad dressing to the public. With each founder contributing $20,000 up front, Newman’s Own was officially born. Although, according to Newman the company “...started as a joke and got out of control.” Today, Newman’s Own is a veritable empire in the packaged, health food market that offers over 200 food and drink products made of all-natural ingredients. From salad dressings, popcorn, pasta sauce, cookies, snacks, lemonade, and more. The options that Newman’s provides are truly endless. Newman’s Own Foundation When Newman’s Own turned a profit of $300,000 in its first year of business, co-founder Paul Newman famously said, “Let’s Give It All Away.” Over the decades that followed, Newman’s...

Why You’ll Love Spelt Pretzels

Spelt is an ancient grain that has been untouched by modern industrial agriculture. A distant cousin to wheat, spelt contains gluten, making it a great alternative ingredient for breads and other baked goods. With a bite of a Newman's Own Organics Spelt Pretzels it proves spelt’s ability to take the place of wheat without compromising flavor or texture.

Along with its delicious, slightly nutty taste, spelt has many health benefits including fiber, and minerals like copper, zinc, and phosphorus. Compared to modern wheat, it boasts higher levels of essential fatty acids, and vitamins such as niacin. While the presence of gluten means it is not a suitable food for people with celiac disease, studies have shown that many people with wheat sensitivities and inflammation respond well to spelt products.

Newman’s Own Spelt Pretzels are made using certified-organic, vegan ingredients, and are bagged in non-BPA packaging. Enjoy them with your favorite dip or as a grab-and-go treat!

Health benefits of spelt

Fiber: Each cup of spelt has 19 grams of fiber, an essential component of any healthy diet.

Iron: At 8 milligrams of iron per cup, spelt has high levels of this mineral.

Riboflavin: Spelt is an excellent source of riboflavin (vitamin B2), a water-soluble nutrient that must be replenished in the body each day.

Niacin: Also known as vitamin B3. Spelt contains nearly a whole day’s USDA allowance of this vital nutrient.

Spelt vs. Wheat

Easier to Digest: Although spelt contains gluten, it is easier to digest than wheat. Spelt’s gluten is water-soluble, fragile, and degrades upon mixing or with heat. Many people who have trouble digesting wheat, such as those suffering from celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or have issues with inflammation, often find spelt to be a food that agrees with them.

Lower glycemic Index: Spelt flour has a glycemic index of 54, whereas whole wheat flour has a glycemic index of 72.

Higher omega-3s and 6s: Spelt has nearly double the milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids and nearly 50 percent more omega-6 fatty acids than wheat.

Vitamin K: Compared with wheat, spelt has twice the vitamin K.

New ways to enjoy pretzels:

Whether dipped in cheese or mustard, or eaten alongside a cold pint of beer, everyone has a go-to way to enjoy pretzels. Here are a few recipes that add a new twist on a classic snack:

Pretzel Fudge

Use pretzels to top a mixture of cacao powder, coconut oil, almond butter, and raw honey. This is antioxidant-packed, no-bake, vegan treat is one that the kids can help make and love.

Dark Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Bites

Melt 1 bag of dark chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of heavy cream over a double boiler.

Next, pour 1 package of Newman's Own Organics Spelt Pretzels in a plastic bag, seal, and lightly crush with your hands or a rolling pin. Add the crushed pretzels to the chocolate, spoon by the tablespoon onto a sheet of waxed paper, and chill overnight. Mix and match flavor profiles, either by adding 1 cup of shredded coconut to the mix or lightly sprinkling the bites with Himalayan sea salt before chilling.

Spelt Pretzel-Crusted Chicken

Just because you don’t eat wheat doesn’t mean you have to miss out on crispy “breaded” chicken. Use a rolling pin to crush one bag of Newman's Own Organics Spelt Pretzels in a sealed plastic bag.

Pour the pretzel crumbs onto a plate, and mix in 1 tablespoon of Simply Organic Italian Seasoning, salt, and pepper. Place next to a bowl containing Organic Spelt Flour and a third bowl containing two eggs whipped with a fork.

Using one hand for “wet” ingredients and the other for “dry ingredients, dip uncooked chicken tenders in each of the three bowls, starting with the egg wash, before placing on a lightly oiled baking sheet. Mist with Extra Virgin Olive Oil Spray , and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 mintutes. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

More about Newman’s Own

Newman’s Own was founded by her father, movie star and philanthropist Paul Newman and A.E. Hotchner in 1982. All proceeds going to Newman’s Own Foundation, a non-profit organization that has given away $460 million dollars to a variety of charities.

Spelt Pretzels, YUMMY!

These are great pretzels. Frankly, I cannot tell the difference in taste between these and regular pretzels. Nor can my husband; but I had to get him some regular ones so he stayed out of mine! This is a great price, too. I was paying $3.99 at Whole Foods for the same bag.

- Louise

The pretzel for people who thing they hate pretzels

I hated pretzels until I met Newman's spelt pretzels. They are a perfect snack, and-- given Newman's philanthropy-- I just think these are a no-brainer for anyone planning a party or needing a lunchbox filler. They're so tasty, crisp, and light, I can't believe I'm recommending a pretzel, & yet I am.

- Audrey

These are a wonderfully crunchy low calorie snack. It has a subtle nutty taste and are not too salty.

- Nathan

Solid choice

These pretzels are your basic hard pretzel. Crispy, tasty, slightly salty. I had them dipped in Justin's Chocolate-hazelnut butter. #noregrets

My #1FAV!!!

Can't say enough about these pretzels. They are delicious and the price at Thrive is better than anywhere. My only complaint is that the bag is small and I eat them so fast that I have to ration myself. :-)

- Leslie

Delicious crispy little pretzels, with a minimal number of ingredients and just the right amount of salt. And it feels good to be having a snack that actually has good spelt flour - not just the usual bleached white flour that has no nutrients. Great product!

- Marsha

- Cary Rhodomoyer

I love trying new things, and glad I tried these. My husband is picky, and even he liked them. DEF purchasing again...Lighter than regular pretzels, almost a cracker quality, but agree, wouldn't mind less salt.

- Rochelle

Great tasting pretzels without all the garbage that conventional pretzels have...if you like pretzels, you'll like these!

- Debra

I pack these in my husbands lunch everyday and he really enjoys them.

- Katherine

Best pretzels!

Best pretzels ever! I wasn't sure what to expect from these pretzels but they taste wonderful better than any pretzels I've ever had and they are good for you!

- Lisa

A wonderful alternative to pretzels that are filled with sugar and gluten, and other things you cannot pronounce! This product offers a delicious savory crunch in a moderately healthy snack. Bags are small, but munching a large handful each afternoon, they last us about a week.

- Sarina

These pretzels was surprisingly good. great flavor and does not taste like a salt lick like the ones in the store. I will be purchasing again.

- Danhl

- Sam

A new to us favorite

We really liked these pretzels and will be buying them again!

- Helen

It's hard to find organic pretzels and my daughter likes these. Also, the customer service department is very good, I needed to inquire about allergens so I could use these for a class snack.

- Suzannah

Although these are less terrible that the high protein version, they still lack any flavor

- Anthony

Kids love them

My kids can't even tell the difference. Taste just like a Snyder's pretzel. Nice treat to have around the house. Wish it came in a bulk bag. They don't last long.

- Katherine

My favorite

They are very good. Better than regular pretzels

- Carolina

Using sea salt instead of table salt would be a great improvement in my book.

- Thrive User

Good but too much sodium

I like the fact that these are natural pretzels made from spelt, which isn't all that different in flavor from wheat or oat. The pretzels are solid and a great healthy snack except for the sodium. Wish they could find a way to bring that 240mg per serving down under the 200s. Hard to stay healthy when you're ingesting that amount of salt.

- Eve H.

Fantastic pretzels

If you've never heard of spelt it's like wheat, but seems to have a sturdier texture. These pretzels are made from spelt, sunflower oil and salt, and that's just about it. They have a big, rich taste, and they will get you filled up in a few minutes of active eating. But you probably won't want to stop because they're that good. Newman's Own does a great job of mixing all natural and flavorful with a lot of their products, and this is no exception.

- Edward Herrera

These are delicious pretzels. Unlike pretzels that are non-organic, these actually have some great nutritionals behind them. Of course, they have a fair amount of sodium, but they also have 4 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein. You also get to eat quite a bit of pretzels for a single serving. In fact, the bag has 7 servings in the container, so that's quite a bit of delicious taste at once. These are yummy, and they have a nice and delicious crunch to them. Honestly, they taste like non-organic and "unhealthy" pretzels - except these are organic and healthy. I love them!

- Tracy

Hearty Taste, Very Filling

Spelt pretzels from Newman's Own are very filling. This is a good thing because it helps curb my appetite. Pretzels as an afternoon snack keeps me energized until dinner and beyond.

These pretzels have a unique taste to them. The only thing I don't care for is there seems to be too much salt for my taste. I'm not sure if it's me or the snack, but too much salt is not a good thing.

Glad to see Newman's Own pairing up with Thrive Market. Thrive saves me money on all my healthy foods, snacks and personal products!

- Casey Johnson

Great taste and made with organic ingredients.

These pretzels tastes great and they are made with organic ingredients. I love it because its Not too salty but not bland either. It is so filling and contains more fiber than regular pretzels too!
