They come from a plant that’s part of the mint family—salvia hispanica—native to Mexico and Guatemala, and one of their defining features is how they’re able to swell beyond their original size when added to liquid. (Hello, healthy chia pudding!) Nutritionally, chia seeds pack a punch. A 2-tablespoon serving offers 11 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein, and 20 percent of your recommended daily value of calcium. Although Health Warrior has since branched out to many other superfoods, its original bar all started with chia.
The History of Health Warrior
Health Warrior was founded in 2010 by college friends Dan Gluck, Nick Morris, and Shane Emmett. Before going into business together, the trio competed as collegiate athletes and noticed that their sedentary, post-college professional life was making it challenging to stay fit. After learning about Mexico’s Tarahumara people, who are known for using chia seeds to deliver protein and energy to help fuel long runs, the friends started experimenting with superfoods in their own diets. The result of those experiments was the first Health Warrior protein bar, made with chia seeds as the star ingredient.
