Up until industrialization took hold after World War II, Certifed Biodynamic farming was a mainstay on many American farms. The practice has roots in Europe, when philosopher and scientist Dr. Dr. Rudolf Steiner developed the method in 1924. Often referred to as “the father of Biodynamics,” Steiner believed that if elements of the farm care were kept in harmony, then it would help animals and plants exist in their natural states, and produce more nutrient-dense food.
Biodynamic farm practices include:
- Biological diversity: 10 percent of a farm’s land must serve as a biodiversity reserve
- Soil fertility: Supportive practices like crop rotation and rotational grazing are used to preserve soil health
- Disease and weed control: Pests must be managed without the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals
- Water conservation: Examples include efficient irrigation systems, solar pumps, and wind pumps
In order for farms to receive Biodynamic certification, they’re required to undergo a rigorous, multi-year process outlined by Demeter, the certifying organization. Steps include filling out a lot of paperwork, hosting Demeter representatives for site visits, undergoing evaluations, and continuing a modified process year after year to keep the designation.
