The first kitchen sponges were created by accident in 1937 by German scientist Otto Bayer, who invented polyurethane foam. Bayer’s early iterations resembled sea sponges and didn’t last long because of how fragile they were. More durable sponges have been developed over the years, and mostly rely on a mix of materials such as wood pulp, hemp fibers, sodium sulphate crystals, and chemical softeners—not exactly the most non-toxic ingredient lineup. But there’s good news for those of you who are interested in greener options. Today we’re introducing you to a sponge that’s completely plant-based and compostable, and still gets the job done.
The History of Twist
Brian Ross wanted to bring an eco-friendly “twist” to the humble sponge. His sponges and cloths help eliminate reliance on paper towels, steel wool scrubbers, and sponges that harbor bacteria. For example, one European Sponge Cloth equals approximately 17 rolls of paper towels. In an interview, Ross has referred to cleaning products as an “undeveloped category in natural products,” which is why he decided to bring his passion about the environment to this area and work on making a positive difference.
Twist Company Mission
One sponge at a time, Twist is trying to contribute to a more sustainable planet. Dyes and glues in traditional cellulose sponges can be harmful to the environment and polyester scrubbers never disappear from landfills. That’s why Twist is dedicated to providing consumers with a better option.
Benefits of Twist
All of Twist’s materials are plant-based. The wood pulp for its cellulose is sourced from FSC Certified forests, and each scrubber is hand-sewn onto the cellulose base. The brand’s loofahs feature a bright white sponge on one side and a natural tan scrubber on the other side, so you can easily handle any mess. Dianna from Ariz., calls the scrub sponge a “must-have for any kitchen,” and Ashton from Mass., says they’re “super absorbant.” Andrea from Calif., likes to use the loofah sponge for her tub, which she reports looks “absolutely sparkling” when she’s done, and Sara from N.Y., says, “These sponges are amazing. They have a great texture and nothing sticks to them.”
