Take your love of chocolate to the next level by curling up with a bar from Theo Chocolate. This brand of organic and fair trade chocolate isn’t just about the finished product. Theo boasts one of the first bean-to-bar factories in North America and has been growing sustainable cocoa beans since 2006—all while celebrating the connections we all have between one another. Although the chocolate itself is made in Seattle, it’s intimately linked to everyone from the farmers in the Congo to chocolate lovers in Texas. Ultimately, the company is committed to making a positive impact every step of the way.
The History of Theo Chocolate
In 1994, founder Joe Whinney began supplying organic cocoa beans to the United States. Traveling and working in the tropics of Africa and Central America, he fell in love with both locations, as well as the people he met along the way. He wanted to make a difference in these communities and championed bringing organic cocoa beans to the masses, implementing fair trade practices for local farmers. Ten years later, Whinney relocated to Seattle and began building the business of Theo Chocolate with Debra Music, vice president of sales and marketing. They spent two years developing the branding and building a factory where Theo’s sustainable, organic, and fair trade chocolate is made today.
Theo Chocolate Company Mission
Theo Chocolate’s mission is to help create a beautiful, compassionate, and enduring world by responsibly making delicious and inspiring products for all. While its passion is chocolate, Theo wants to make the world a better place, too. The brand views cocoa not just as a basic ingredient, but as the heart of its business—the team maintains direct trade relationships with their suppliers and visits them regularly. By negotiating the best prices, providing agricultural training, and offering quality incentive payments, Theo helps farmers plan financially for the future and become more sustainable in the long-run.
