Why You’ll Love Organic Grass Fed Classic Mild Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese

Few foods are loved more in American households than macaroni and cheese. Though many families have their own homemade versions of the dish (often passed down from generation to generation), a delicious bowl can just as well be made from a high-quality prepared mix. Annie's Homegrown Organic Grass-Fed Classic Mild Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese offers all the richness and taste of the classic noodle dish alongside the benefits of organic wheat and organic grass-fed dairy.

Though macaroni & cheese has a reputation for being inherently indulgent, Annie's Homegrown Organic Grass-Fed Classic Mild Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese has just 270 calories and five grams of fat per serving, and also offers a whopping 10 grams of protein (by comparison, that’s roughly the same as 1.5 ounces of chicken breast). With 15 percent of the USDA recommended daily of serving of calcium, it’s also a smart choice for helping to maintain healthy bones and hair. In addition to organic cheddar cheese, nonfat milk, and organic wheat pasta, Annie’s mix is made from organic butter and salt—there are no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or GMOs here, so you can feel good about feeding it to your family.

Benefits of organic dairy

There are many reasons why Annie’s opted for organic dairy to make this classic mix:

  • No growth hormones: USDA regulations state that organic cows can’t be injected or implanted with hormones in order to stimulate growth. In particular, the use of estrogen in conventional dairy and meat products has been linked to early onset puberty in children. And, in adults, there are concerns that the use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) may lead to higher levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF), which has been associated with illnesses such as breast and prostate cancer.

  • No antibiotics: Organic cows may not be treated with antibiotics to promote growth or treat disease, which also benefits the consumer of dairy products. Overuse of antibiotics in humans have been linked to increased rates of illness, since some viruses have evolved over time to become resistant.

  • Lower risk of contamination: Organic standards for dairy products means a decreased risk of contamination by pesticides, hormones, and fertilizers since organic-raised cows are not exposed to these agents, which are commonly used in conventional feed.

  • Less environmental impact: The use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers on grasslands and other crops can wipe out certain forms of microbes, insects, and other forms of life. Some chemicals also put birds at risk of illness or death, either by eating pesticide-laden foods or through a reduction in their natural food supply.

The many nutrients present in organic dairy

Not only is organic dairy free of dangerous compounds like antibiotics and hormones, but it’s also packed full of higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals, including:

  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid: Also known as CLA, it’s derived from omega-6 fatty acids that are essential for health. CLA is only found in animal and dairy products, and milk from grass-fed cows can have up to seven times the amount found in milk from conventionally raised cows. Some researchers believe that a deficit may be partially to blame for the rise in weight-gain among Americans; there is evidence that suggests that CLA promotes increased metabolic rate and muscle growth, and lowers insulin resistance.

  • Vitamin B12: Organic, grass-fed dairy is one of the world’s most potent sources of B12, a vitamin that supports the central nervous system as well as cardiovascular and digestive functions, and reduces the risk of many health conditions including poor dental health, pernicious anemia, and chronic fatigue. It also helps the body maintain good energy levels and healthy skin and hair.

  • Iodine: Grass-fed dairy is an excellent source of iodine, containing nearly 20 percent of the USDA recommended daily allowance. Iodine helps the body convert food into energy, and promotes optimal thyroid function.

  • Vitamin D: Grass-fed dairy contains a healthy dose of vitamin D, which regulates the body’s ability to absorb calcium and phosphorus, leading to stronger hair, teeth, and bones. In fact, low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased risks of osteoporosis, type 1 diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Try a new spin on your favorite mac & cheese

Here are more creative ways to incorporate the dish.

Macaroni and Cheese with Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto

Annie’s Homegrown Organic Grass-Fed Classic Mild Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese is a complete dish in itself, but its rich, creamy flavors go well with a variety of ingredients that make it fun to mix and match and make every bowl unique. Try adding a tablespoon of Santini’s Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto to your mac ‘n’ cheese just before serving for a gourmet twist on the classic.

Macaroni and Cheese Pizza

It might sound like a strange combination at first, but there’s reason why macaroni and cheese pizza has been popping up on restaurant menus across the country: Why settle for one favorite indulgence when you can have two at a time? Prepare Annie’s Homegrown Organic Grass-Fed Classic Mild Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese according to the instructions on the box, and then spread on top of a homemade pizza crust made with Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Mix. Pop under the broiler for a few minutes, and enjoy.

More about Annie’s Homegrown

Annie’s Homegrown got its start selling homemade mac and cheese to independently-owned natural food shops and regional supermarkets in the New England area throughout the ‘90s and slowly amassed a rabid following through word of mouth.

Best Boxed Mac n' Cheese EVER!

Annie's pastas and soups were a huge pantry staple for me ever since I made the switch to organic in college. These are easy to make, have high quality ingredients, and come from a company with formidable integrity in their business practices. I love that they make healthy, organic versions of easy-cook foods for people like me who can only cook the most basic of foods. I've long since graduated and settled down and, luckily for me, my wife is an amazing cook, but I saw that Annie's came out with a grass-fed organic variant on their mac n' cheese and I just had to try it. So delicious, and it felt good in my body. Other boxed macs left me a little clogged up and sluggish, but not the case with these ingredients. The sauce was smooth and creamy and had a very authentic tasting cheese flavor. Now that my wife and I are expecting, Annie's will surely become a pantry staple once again in the near future.
