It isn’t every day that we get to sing the praises of a brand that has more than stood the test of time. But this company is different. King Arthur Flour has been in business for more than two centuries (yes, CENTURIES!). From initially sold as an English import to finding its American roots and offering a wide selection of baking staples, King Arthur Flour has earned its rightful place in our pantries and our hearts. But what’s even more noteworthy is the company’s long-standing commitment to the environment, ethical farming practices, and desire to incorporate quality ingredients into each of their delicious products.
The History of King Arthur Flour
King Arthur Flour has been an American pantry staple since 1790, when Henry Wood began importing flour from England and established a business at Boston’s Long Wharf. This became the ancestor company of King Arthur Flour today. In 1825, the company began milling flour from American grown wheat, effectively ending English imports. After it was introduced as a “new and improved” flour at the Boston Food Fair in 1896, the evolved product was named King Arthur for it’s Arthurian attributes: "purity, loyalty, honesty, superior strength, and a dedication to a higher purpose.” The company has since moved from Boston to Norwich, Vermont where it maintains its headquarters today.
