Buying organic is a great way to enjoy healthy food while supporting the planet, but biodynamic products go a step further. Once popular during WWII, biodynamic farming is coming back in a big way. This sustainable approach to farming doesn’t just avoid the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals but works to enrich the health of the farmland and encourages the ethical treatment of livestock. Biodynamic farms are self-sustaining systems that rotate both crops and animals through the land, which serves to produce the necessary fertilizer for maximum energy efficiency. Learn more about this forward-thinking farming approach that is rooted in old school wisdom.
What Is Biodynamic?
Biodynamic farming was developed by Austrian philosopher Dr. Rudolf Steiner in 1924. Steiner believed in looking to the cosmos in an effort to harmonize all components of the farm, including sun and soil. Biodynamic farming aims to support animals and plants in their most natural state, and produce nutrient-dense food in the process.
Benefits of Biodynamic
Certified biodynamic farming meets all the requirements of organic agriculture with some additional measures that improve overall energy efficiency. For example, biodynamic standards require that the farms produce their own fertilizer through composting wherever possible, resulting in a self-sustaining system. These farms also avoid pesticides and use rotational grazing, which helps prevent soil and waterway pollution.
Demeter USA is the only certifier for biodynamic farms and products in America. In order to receive Demeter Biodynamic Certification, farms must adhere to the following requirements:
- Abstain from using synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides
- Put aside at least 10 percent of the land for the sake of biodiversity (which includes crop and animal rotations)
- Meet the standards of the National Organic Program
