About This Brand

Started by street vendors in Harlem in 1991, Nubian Heritage rose from humble beginnings to bring culturally authentic healing traditions from ancient Nubia to the modern world. Nubian Heritage draws its inspiration from Ancient Nubia, which was once a center of cultural trade — a place where goods, ideas, and customs from across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean came together, influenced each other, and then spread across the world. The company brings new life to traditional healing practices, cultural wisdom and indigenous ingredients, resulting in ancient takes on modern solutions for skin and hair. Nubian Heritage continuously develops new products and remedies, and plans to create more in the future. Although, what will never change are how their products are made and the values they carry. Why You’ll Love African Black Bar Soap

Feeling fresh and clean is important for almost everyone, but not all soaps are cut from the same cloth. Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap delivers a rich, creamy lather with natural ingredients like Shea Butter and coconut oil to create a one-of-a-kind soap.

Nubian Heritage

Over 20 years ago co-founders Richelieu Dennis, Nyema Tubman and Mary Dennis, created Nubian Heritage in Harlem, New York. After graduating from renowned business school Babson College in 1991, Richelieu and Nyema were unable to return to their home country of Liberia due to civil war. Fresh out college and without jobs, the childhood friends partnered with Richelieu’s mother, Mary, to bring the healing traditions of African Black Soap and Shea Butter to the community they loved. Passionate about natural products with indigenous ingredients and the cultures they come from, they began handcrafting shea butter soaps and salves and sold them as street vendors.

Guided by the legacy of ancient Nubia, the world's first melting pot, Nubian Heritage focuses on remixing global healing traditions into modern wellness solutions. Ancient Nubia was once a center of cultural trade—a place where goods, ideas, and customs from across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean came together, influenced each other, and then spread across the ancient world. That’s the inspiration behind Nubian Heritage.

Benefits of Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap

Made with true passion, this is a soap that goes beyond just cleaning the body, but it also delivers additional benefits to anyone who uses it:

  • Vegetarian – No animal products are used in making Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap, and at no time are any of the ingredients tested on animals. It’s not just vegetarian friendly—it’s cruelty free as well.

  • Natural – Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap is created without the use of any manmade chemicals. It’s crafted using all natural vegetable based ingredients including aloe leaf juice, plantain extract, coconut oil, and more.

  • Gentle – Sensitive skin can be irritated by the harsh chemicals and fragrances in commercial soaps. But Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap is designed to be gentle on the skin.

  • Hydrating – The inclusion of Shea Butter provides hydration to the skin, helping moisturize and improve its appearance. Better skin hydration can help reduce wrinkles and signs of aging, and can also help improve the way that the skin feels.

  • Medicinal - Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap also includes ingredients that have a long history of medicinal properties. Things like plantain peel, palm ash, and tamarind all help to balance the chemical makeup and promote healthier, more vibrant looking skin.

  • Exfoliation – Not only does Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap contain a number of cleansing ingredients, but the formula also helps promote better exfoliation. This process removes the dead skin cells from the top layer and helps promote growth of new cells.

  • Scent – Unlike the harsh, chemically constructed fragrances that are added to so many soaps and body washes, Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap is a natural formula that provides a refreshing scent all on its own.

  • Biodegradable – The all-natural recipe of Nubian Heritage African Black Bar Soap makes it safe to use not only for the body, but also for the world. The ingredients break down naturally and have no impact on the environment.

  • Fair trade - This African Black Bar Soap and all Nubian Heritage products are made with fair trade practices in mind, promoting a better future for those involved in its creation.

Hair Soap

Yes, that is right , I use this soap for my hair. I have natural 4b/4c hair and this soap has been a God send. Literally. I lost most of my hair 6 years ago due to illness. I started using this soap 5 years ago and I know have 9 inches of healthy hair on my head. This soap cleans my hair without stripping it, leaving it soft and manageable. Pretty incredible!

While I don't use for my skin, I do use other Nubian Heritage soaps daily. Right now I am using the Frankincense and Myrrh and the Green Tea/ Olive Oil. In warm weather I use the mango, exclusively... Love the prices and I have requested more soaps to be added!

- Michelle

Love This Soap!

Not only does it smell great but it really helps your skin. My husband is prone to breakouts since he's in the gym a lot, this soap has cut those down by half. Really nice lather as well. Only drawn back is now your soap ring in the tube is darker so you see faster, guess that means more cleaning

LOVE, LOVE THIS SOAP!

This is my go-to bar soap. I love the scent (it's not strong to me, and I'm a bit sensitive). It helps to clear pimples and help prevent them. I like some of the other soaps from this brand, but this one is my favorite because it really helps with blemishes.

- Jessica

Now This Soap

I love black soap. Always kept my skin moisturized and clears pimples/pimple marks. I always use with a sapo/esponge (African wash cloth) for my face and another for my body. I also have used the Coconut & Papaya soap that Nubian Heritage offers, and have never been disappointed.

- Kai

Strong scent

I am very particular about strong scents, so it had too stron of a scent for me but product itself looked like it was probably very good.

- Maria

African Black Bar Soap

Betty I purchased a bar of this Hand Soap, and have used it daily since opening it. I have never found any soap that I have enjoyed using as I have this soap. It is non-drying, a wonderful aroma, and voluems of easily rinsed suds. I intend to keep an extra in my Bath Vanity at all times.

Minimal ingredients and works wonders with dry skin!

- Monica

best soap in the world

even without using the cream associate with it, you can already feel cleaner than you have ever felt before. everything feels new after taking a bath with this.

- Antoinette

Pretty Good

Cleans well, suds nicely and easily. It has a light tropical scent. Not ultra moisturizing for very dry skin but you can skip moisturizing after and still be okay. The exfoliating chunks in it can sometimes be very rough and scratch the skin.

- Mary

Winning him over

I tried this soap for the natural and fair trade aspects. But it smells great and is not over drying. My picky husband is even using it now. It's a great value compared to our local store.

- TJ

- Kathy

Love this soap.

It leaves my skin feeling smooth and clean without over drying. I definitely recommend it for sensitive skin as it feels gentle on the skin.

- Kimberly

helped my acne

My skin is very sensitive and does not accept any soap or face wash change easily. With African black soap, it was a different story and it has not only helped my acne but my skin feels less itchy now. The soap does not smell like an antiseptic and I don’t have to rub tons on lotion after using this soap. You can also use in on the entire body without any fear of allergy. But make sure to test it before applying to avoid any skin problems later on.
