Why You’ll Love Non-GMO Wild Pacific Sardines in Water
Although he probably didn’t realize it at the time, Napoleon Bonaparte helped to popularize sardines in the 18th century. The French general was looking for an easy solution to feed his growing army and had the little fish canned for a food supply that could be conveniently transported. But, also likely unbeknownst to him, what he did in the process was provide the soldiers with an incredible food option. Because sardines are eaten whole—very much in line with the Paleo diet—they come with a number of healthy vitamins, minerals, and fats that provide fuel to get you through the day.
Whether they’re mixed in a refreshing salad, packed into a mouthwatering sandwich, or even simply enjoyed alone, these flavorful fish from Wild Planet are hard to resist. Plucked from the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of California and Japan, these fresh-from-the-sea sardines have been cleaned and scaled, and are ready to be part of an amazing meal.
Sardines nutritional value
Sardines don’t just taste amazing—they’re good for you, too. The non-GMO snack contains a slew of vitamins and minerals, and is verified kosher, gluten-free, organic, and Paleo-friendly. Here is the breakdown of what is found inside each 4.375 oz. can:
Vitamin D: Very few foods actually contain vitamin D, which has become an issue more recently. Ten years ago, people generally spent a fair amount of time outside, and received plenty of vitamin D from sunlight, which is a potent source. But in recent years we’ve had a shift towards a more indoor lifestyle and, along with it, an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency. Low blood levels of this vitamin have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease as well as cognitive impairment, asthma, and cancer. Increasing vitamin D intake will help with these medical concerns and also aid in bone health and cancer prevention.
Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 helps with proper red blood cell formation, regular body function, and energy levels. Many Americans (up to 40%) could have a deficiency of B12 in their lifetime, the result of which can lead to fatigue, anemia, constipation, and loss of appetite. For a quick increase in B12, sardines are a great option that can provide more energy overall.
Vitamin B2. Also called riboflavin, vitamin B2 converts the food people eat into usable energy and supports a healthy liver, skin, hair, and eyes. Without sufficient amounts of vitamin B2, cataracts and migraine headaches can become a problem, so a quick boost like eating Wild Planet sardines can provide immediate results and help in the long-term, too.
Vitamin B3. Similar to B2, vitamin B3 provides stores of energy. Without enough of it, high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes can potentially develop. Increasing the intake of vitamin B3 in foods like sardines can help to balance cholesterol levels and triglycerides, and put people at a lower risk for cardiovascular diseases.
Magnesium. This mineral is a bit of a powerhouse, helping with healthy teeth and bones, heart health, blood pressure, and even aiding in the treatment of some mental health problems like depression.
Iron. Iron helps to metabolize proteins and aids in the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells—basically meaning that it helps fill your blood with oxygen and keeps you going, day to day. Without enough of it, people can feel fatigued and can even battle iron deficiency–related anemia, so it’s a vital mineral for healthy energy levels.
Calcium. Aiding in bone health, dental health, and even in the prevention of colon cancer and the reduction of obesity, calcium is a must in any diet. For people who have issues consuming dairy, sardines are the perfect place to get this vital nutrient.
Zinc. Immunity health, diabetes control, reduction of stress levels. Zinc can help with all of these. People who consume zinc regularly often experience healthy energy levels, weight loss, and eye care.
Fats get a bad reputation, but human bodies need fat to live. Saturated fats—like those that exist in lard, fatty beef, butter, cheese, and other dairy products—are the ones that are important to avoid. Look instead for the “good” fats like Omega-3’s that are packed in sardines. Omega-3’s can lower triglyceride levels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease, so they’re a huge benefit for heart health.
Other valuable nutritional facts
But this is just the start of what sardines can provide. A single can also delivers a dose of selenium, protein, and vitamin B6, among other nutrients. Eating the fish regularly can help with:
- Lower cholesterol
- Stronger bones and teeth
- Powerful immunity
- Improved liver function
- Properly functioning eyes and skin
Non-GMO Wild Pacific Sardines are also an excellent seafood option that’s less likely to be contaminated with mercury or other toxins since sardines are closer to the bottom of the food chain in the ocean and consume fewer pollutants themselves. Wild Planet was also rated as the Best Choice for Sustainability by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program, meaning eating this fish source won’t harm the environment.
Sardines are an incredibly versatile meal option—it’s possible to make them the centerpiece of a delicious dinner, but they’re also just as scrumptious added into recipes or as a side dish. Here are a few of Thrive Market’s favorite ideas:
This Mediterranean pasta starts with a bed of brown rice spaghetti, which is topped with the salty brightness of capers, green olives, and citrus to elevate sardines into a quick, elegant springtime meal. Even better it takes less than 30 minutes to make!
The lemon brings out the flavor of the fish while fennel, red onion, purple basil, and feta add nice contrast for a refreshing and crisp lunch or dinner salad.
This recipe calls for anchovies, but sardines are an easy and equally healthy substitute. Since this side dish comes together in just 15 minutes, it makes an easy and flavorful side for any dinner.

These are the best sardines out there. They are unmatched in flavor and quality! YUM!
Be informed... skin and cartilage!
These are not bad sardines. Pretty good really. I just didn't realize they were the skin-on (no scales), bones-in (no head or tail) kind. I'm sure there's nutritional value there and truly they taste good but I had been used to the skinned and filleted version so I was surprised when I opened the can! I bought these for my kids and I and while I was surprised, I do like to expose them to things that some people would be grossed out by. However, I do pull the spine out before giving it to my 12 month old.

Simply, the best!!
Been eating sardines all my life (I am 73 years old). I ain't gonna lie to ya!! These are the best sardines I have ever eaten.
Very good and they are real deal.
Die hard Sardine Lover
These are large and packed in water and delicious.
Best sardines ever
I've been raving about these sardines for a couple of years. Not only are they sustainable, they're good for you, and yes, taste way better than any other sardine I've ever tasted. They might be a little more expensive, but worth every dime.
Sardines... Who Knew
My first try of sardines - and I really enjoyed them! Great flavor just by themselves. Definitely picking up more.
I love sardines! so nice when they come to my door!
Best I've found; good texture; great taste.
GREAT TASTING-NOT FISHY
I wasn't a huge fan of sardines, but when I tried these - I became a huge fan. Not fishy and great in a salad or on a paleo wrap with onions/lettuce.
These have great protein low fat lots of calcium and other vitamins and minerals that you need. I like him better and water they're not greasy and it seems to bring out the flavor better!
got to have it
I enjoy eating this treat at a decent price.

Wild Planet products
I was surprised and happy to see that you offer Wild Planet products. They are quite expensive in our supermarkets. The Wild Pacific Sardines in Water are very handy to have in the cubbard when the fridge is empty.
Non GMO Wild Pacific Sardines
These were great. The sardines are large, gutted, deboned and yummy. There were only six in my tin but they ate like twelve since they were so large I could spilt them in two. They had great sardine flavor.
Really good sardines, makes a great sardine butter.
Wild planet sardines in water
Actually I don't eat sardines. My dog loves them
These were very good. I will be ordering more.
I like the fact that they are caught in the ocean non-gmo's. Really good flavor, and good for us.
- Patricia Davenport-Perkins
Beautiful and Quality!
All the other reviewers are correct! Large portions, good flavor, VERY high quality!!! Not fishy (and I am VERY picky). Used broken/mashed in dressings, wrapped in Paleo coconut wraps with lettuce and "dressing" . . . versatile eating / snacking!
Great for dogs
I have two older dogs that are both in great shape! It could be coincidental but I have been feeding them sardines twice a week for several years.
Although I haven't tried them because I am a vegan, my dogs seem to love them! I have always bought sardines from local grocery stores but decided to give these a chance. I wish I had discovered them sooner. I feel like I'm getting much more bang for my buck with these because the generic store brands seemed to be filled with water and much less fish. These cans come packed tight with very little water and the fist seem to be large and firm.
- Harriet Harvey
I was quite pleased with the freshness I felt in each bite. However, they were slightly dry for my liking.
I have been eating the Wild Planet Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and I must say I like the saltier and greasy taste from those more.
Both are great, but it can also depend on what you are partnering them with. Excellent source of Omega 3 in either selection.

Delicious on-the-go protein
I eat a lot of tuna and was looking to switch it up a little bit but still get my omega fats and my protein so I decided to try Wild Planet's sardines. They taste great and are meatier than some other brands I've tried. They also tasted fresher and the low sodium is a plus. I was really impressed with the company's standards and transparency on their fishing methods and it was another huge plus that they were wild-caught. All in all delicious, convenient, and perfect for if you're trying to be environmentally conscious.
I didn't know I liked Sardines!
I started trying canned sardines for their high nutrient levels, and never really liked them. I like fish, but every time I would open up canned Sardines, they would smell awful.
These, on the other hand, are delicious! The first thing I noticed was that the smell was much more appealing when I opened the can. Then when I looked at them, they were plump and rounded, not smashed flat in the can (in fact not "packed in like sardines!") These tasted a bit like Tuna, so I chopped them and put them on my salad. I'm so glad I tried these, now I can eat my healthy fish, and enjoy it!

Very Good- Not the Best
These sardines are great but, I have had other brands I prefer more. I prefer this brand over anything I can buy at the supermarket because the only ingredients are sardines, water and sea salt! Caught in the Pacific Ocean and distributed out of California keeps them fresh!
Being a fish fanatic, I would just like to say that there are better brands with a more desirable taste. For your average fish consumer- these will be fantastic!
- Mel Matthews
I absolutely love the size of these Sardines! They are HUGE! It is impressive, really how big they are compared to other sardines. Wild Planet did a great job with these-they even do a great job of keeping them scale free. These sardines are definitely a keeper! I love them on crackers and instead of anchovies I like to add them to pizza-a great addition!

High quality sardines
These sardines are better tasting than most I have tasted in the past. They don't have the metal taste some do and are bigger than most other brands of sardine. I like how much cheaper they are than other brands of sardines, especially here on Thrive. I am impressed by the size of the sardines and that I have yet to find a scale.
- Steve E.
I can't say that these are any better than any other sardine I have ever had-but they are good. No metal flavor or scales so that is a plus. I like to eat them on crackers or sandwiches. They taste good by themselves too. Will buy again.
- Stan W.
Slightly above average
These are supposed to be as fresh a sardine as you can get. They taste ok, not that much superior to the regular stuff, but at a better price for sure.
I did find a scale in my tin, no biggie, but when you advertise yourself as being a company that removes all the scales from your fish, you should live up to it. Theyr'e good on crackers or toast, at least that's how I like them.
- Leron Hosefa
Bought these for my son - awesome
My son is on a strict diet that limits what he can eat. So when he visited last month, he asked me to buy these sardines and tuna, both from Wild Planet. Well, I had to know what he liked about them, so I tried both.
The sardines are so good. They taste full and meaty if that makes sense. They don't smell very fishy, and they apparently have no additives, just fish packed in water. I've become a convert.
Good tasting sardines
Wild Planet sardines are packed fresh, and you can taste the difference between this and what I normally buy off the shelf.
I also love the price Thrive Market offers on these. They're just over four bucks a tin at Amazon, only two and change on Thrive. I'm loving the deals here, more and more.

Protein super food
Naturally caught sardines with a big flavor that I prefer to the stuff at my local grocer's. Wild Planet is committed to sustainable practices, and I like helping do my part.
The sardines are loaded with Omega 3s and protein, which powers me up during the day. Good on salads or on sandwiches, or ground up to make fish cakes.
- Lon Horton
Great snack food
I love canned fish, especially salmon and tuna. But these sardines may be the best of all. They're sustainably caught, and taste as if they came right out of the ocean into my living room.
I spread them on sandwiches with a little mustard, or make fish stew. They are moist, tender and flavorful. Free of additives too, which makes them much healthier for my family.
- Lillie Hampton
Great taste, wrong size
I love the flavor of these sardines, but I wish they were a little smaller. I feel like I just get to much in each sardine and would like a smaller sized fish.
Wild Planet also offers the best products, and this one is no exception. They always taste great and I never see any issues with them. Great products and I love all of the health benefits in these little fishes!
- Kacie F.
Wife loves them
My wife is a huge fan of these. She loves their big size. She eats them all the time. I, however, wish you would put out some smaller ones. The big ones are just too much for me.
We like our sardines on crackers, I like more cracker than sardine and she likes more sardine than cracker!
Never had a bad catch
This is a wonderful product. I buy these all the time. They always taste great and never skimp on good product. Every container is stuffed full with 4 or 5 good-sized sardines.
I would definitely recommend these to anyone that is looking for a good, healthy, earth-friendly brand of sardines. You will not be disappointed.
Such an affordable treat!
I really love sardines, so when I found them on Thrive for only $2.35, I was very excited to try them. They did not disappoint. They didn't have an overpowering fish smell like other sardine products do and they taste delicious. They aren't too salty and they don't have any strange after taste.
These fish are really great for ones health and for anyone on a paleo and gluten free diet like I am on.
I really love that they are as affordable as they are, I actually ordered three this time around so that I have a stock of them ready to eat whether by them selves or with some crackers. It makes it very worth the investment.
I have to admit, I have not always been a huge sardine fan. But these sardines are different-they are actually GOOD! They aren't metallic in flavor (or extra salty) and they are pretty big and I think that helps in flavor as well.
While I do not like anchovies, I do like these sardines on pizza and they also make a great treat by themselves. They don't smell extra fishy and I think that really plays a part in how great they taste. I have tried other brands that were just way too fishy and the smell really overtook the flavor.
Wild Pacific really has offered a great product and one that consumers can be confident in. I mean, who likes eating a sardine that doesn't even look like it was ever a fish? Wild Pacific sardines still look like, well, sardines! So yummy!

I'll Eat It Out of the Can!
These are probably my favorite sardines to eat. I'll even eat them out of the can. They taste so much better than other sardines that I've tried, and they have a smoky taste that goes so well with my salads. I also really really love that they don't use any BPA to line the insides of the cans. Plus, I get a ton of Omega-3's which has replaced my expensive supplements.
Better than your average sardine
Not only are these healthier than your average sardine, they also seem bigger. Maybe it's just me. They are packed with healthy omega 3 fatty acids that do tons of good things for the body, and especially the heart.
Whenever I need a change from my normal staple food, tuna, I give these sardines a go. I highly recommend them.
- Che McKellar
Sardines that you'll love
These are some great sardines and I love that they are kosher, GMO free and gluten-free. They taste like sardines should.
My favorite thing to do with these is have them on crackers. It's a great quick snack. Perfect for work lunches and camping trips. Think of all the good you're doing for your body and the earth by eating these!
