Why You’ll Love Baking Soda

If you looked at almost every home in America right now, there’d be a box of baking soda in one of the rooms. For decades, this useful household tool has been in refrigerators as an odor absorber, in bathrooms as a safe and effective cleaning agent, and in all kinds of baked recipes as a leavening agent.

Put simply, baking soda is a chemical compound known as sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate can be manufactured in an industrialized process whereby sodium chloride, ammonia, and carbon dioxide react together. However, sodium bicarbonate can also occur naturally in Earth deposits around the world—this form is termed nahcolite.

Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda is extracted from these nahcolite deposits in a simple process using just water. As a result, each 16 oz. bag is 100 percent natural without any additives or impurities.

As a food agent, Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda is also gluten-free and Paleo-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those with dietary restrictions that want to enjoy a variety of compliant baked goods.

The many versatile uses for baking soda

One of the amazing things about baking soda is that it’s a remarkably effective cleaning agent. In fact, during the Manhattan Project that took place during World War II, scientists found that the dangerous uranium oxides they were using had a penchant for sticking to clothing and wouldn’t wash out with anything other than a baking soda solution.

Though you probably won’t encounter any uranium stains in the near future, here are some other ways you can use the power of baking soda around the house and one tip for the gym:

Emergency toothpaste

Out of toothpaste? No problem. Just mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and water to form an almost identical paste that will have your pearly whites shining again in no time.

Quick mouthwash

Baking soda is extremely adept at neutralizing odors, which is why so many people keep a box in the refrigerator. In the same way, mixing a teaspoon of baking soda into half a glass of water makes a fast and easy mouthwash that will completely neutralize bad breath instead of covering it up with a minty smell. Baking soda is also good at killing the bacteria that causes tooth decay, so combining a toothpaste and mouthwash can be an effective one-two punch.

Natural deodorant

Commercial deodorants have a number of chemicals that can seep into your body through your skin. However, you can avoid the bad stuff by using a combination of baking soda and water to create a paste that can act as an all-natural alternative.

Bug bite soother

Bug bites are always a nuisance, especially during the summer when they can cause your skin to swell and itch. Baking soda helps neutralize the toxins that cause skin irritation. Make a solvent with baking soda and water and rub into the affected area for quick relief.

Heartburn reliever

The heartburn and indigestion caused by excessive stomach acid is commonly treated with over-the-counter antacids. And in fact the primary ingredient in most of those products is bicarbonate, which acts as an alkaline to help neutralize stomach acid. A half teaspoon of baking soda dissolved into a glass of water can provide the same relief.

Stubborn food remover

Soaking pots and pans in baking soda and hot water for just 15 minutes can help release stuck-on food so you can easily wipe it away.

Carpet cleaner

Baking soda is also an effective way to loosen any grime or dirt that’s stuck to your carpets as well as neutralizing unpleasant odors. Just sprinkle a little baking soda into the fabric, wait 15 minutes, and then vacuum.

Baby toy cleaner

A mixture of baking soda and water can create a safe, all-natural solution for cleaning your baby’s toys.

Silver polish

Traditional polishes tend to use toxic and caustic chemicals to remove the oxidized layer from the surface of your silverware. As an all-natural alternative, put your silver into a sink full of hot water and let soak with a sheet of aluminum foil and baking soda until it’s back to looking new.

Bathroom cleaner

Commercial bathroom cleaners warn you to wash your skin immediately if it comes into contact with the chemicals. If you want a safer option, baking soda can be a great swap for harsh cleaning supplies. Simply sprinkle some on to the areas you want to clean and get scrubbing.

Hand cleanser

If you’ve ever handled garlic or crabs with your bare hands, you know you can’t get the smell off for days using traditional soaps. Make a simple cleanser with three parts baking soda to one part water.

Cereal Milk Doughnuts

Fueled by nostalgia and whimsy, cereal milk–flavored everything is finding its way onto trendy menus across the country. This colorful and homemade recipe for doughnuts will have anyone yearning for Saturday morning cartoons alongside a bowl of cocoa puffs or cornflakes. Buttermilk Biscuits

Warm, flaky buttermilk biscuits might seem like they take a lifetime of experience to perfect. But, in truth, biscuits are deceptively simple to make—as long as you know a few secrets. That includes resting the dough before you bake it, using really cold butter, and avoiding any twisting to the biscuit cutter when handling the dough. That’s it. Try this easy recipe that incorporates nutritious sprouted flour and all-natural Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda.

Paleo Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Yeast is the traditional leavening agent in most breads, however neither yeast nor wheat flour is allowed on a Paleo or gluten-free diet. Thrive Market comes to the rescue with this healthified version of warm cinnamon raisin bread that substitutes almond flour for wheat flour and uses Bob’s Red Mill Baking Soda as the leavening agent, so you can enjoy each and every slice.

Great baking soda

I love Bob's products for the most part. This is a great baking soda that has a "silkier" / finer feeling than traditional baking sodas most of us are used to. I have purchased this several times now. Wish they offered a bulk bag for so many of us that use baking soda as a cleaning product too.

Best product for making bath bombs!

Not only is this food safe, I also add 1/4 cup of it to my Epsom Salts bath (relieves fibromyalgia muscle aches) along with 1/4 cup of organic citric acid and 8 drops of jojoba oil and scented essential oils. Citric acid and baking soda are what bath bombs are made of and it softens hard water, and adds the "fizz" effects. This is much cheaper than purchasing those balls called "bath bombs" and safer. I used to buy this on Amazon or in Sprouts, but Thrive has the best price and delivers to my door. Highly recommended!

Just Discovered Thrive

I love Bob's Red Mill baking soda and bought 2 from Thrive for less than 1 bag on Amazon! I'm so glad I finally took the time to check out this site, their prices are fantastic and I love the products available. I know this a product review, but it's baking soda : ) I use Bob's Red Mill because it's aluminum free.

Bob's Baking Soda

Bob's Brands are the best. Wish you would carry the aluminum free baking soda as well.

All natural!

Baking soda has been an all purpose staple in my house for many years now. I use it for cleaning, as well as for health and beauty.

As I am gradually converting from the chemical products to all natural ones, I decided to try this brand which comes in its purest form. That simple fact that it is pure makes it a great product. However, I did not see a great difference from the usual store bought brands.

- T. Berry

Great way to go green!

I've been making an effort to go organic and support companies that don't support the use of pesticides or artificial preservatives where possible.
Baking soda is such a simple and basic household product; I personally use it for cleaning and deodorizing so I definitely feel more at ease using something in my bathroom and kitchen that doesn't have all sorts of other pollutants in it. In fact, like most people, I used to buy Arm and Hammer, and when a co-worker urged me to switch because of the ingredients, I decided to do some research of my own. While there is a difference in baking powder, there isn't for baking soda. All baking soda is aluminum free. However, Bob's baking soda is procured from naturally occurring soda deposits where as many others are made by combining the necessary chemicals. Not a huge difference in the long run, so I might use Arm and Hammer for cleaning, but I'll definitely use Bob's for my bath products and for cooking, and I'd definitely rather support Bob's and their products than other brands that don't have the same commitment to quality ingredients in their other products.

Kind of Confused about Aluminum Label

I have no idea if this "no aluminum" thing is legitimate or not. Sometimes I question the information I hear from the company producing the product as it is in their best interest to spin a change. I love Bob's and will assume goodwill.

Regardless, this baking soda did what it was suppose to. I used it in correlation with other Bob's products that I love and will continue to use. My wife uses this to brush her teeth and loves it! I would buy this again and will keep baking!

- Audrey Morris

Best baking soda out there

I highly recommend this baking soda! You can 100% tell the difference between Bob's Red Mill and the other baking soda sold everywhere else. This product is awesome for gastric discomfort and balancing acid levels. Also, this product is aluminum free!

On top of baking, we use this product for our teeth and our faces! My daughter and I wash our faces and brush our teeth with baking soda about once or twice a week and definitely see and feel the positive effects!

- W. French

Stinky refrigerator

When my refrigerator or freezer stinks I use this. It's great at absorbing odors. I keep some in my laundry room near the dirty clothes hamper too. While I love how well Bob's Red Mill baking soda works with odor removal, I haven't had much luck with it in the various ways I've used it as a cleaner.

I always keep some on hand though... you never know when you'll need some.

- Sheri Pinny

Great for DIY projects

While I do sometimes come across a recipe in which I need baking soda for, I usually use it around the house. I make deodorant with it, clean with it, and I even use it to relieve sunburn and the sting of bug bites.

Bob's Red Mill makes quality products and I buy this regularly.

- Mary V.

Miracle product

Here is another wonderful product that no house should be without. I am glad I found this through Thrive Market.

Not only is this a great baking product, but it has many uses for the rest of the body too. One of the main things I use my baking soda for is mouth care. It helps whiten teeth and freshens breathe!

- Yvonne

Aluminum-Free is the Way To Be

Want. Bob's Red Mill Baking Soda doesn't contain any aluminum, so I feel a whole lot better when I add it into foods or use it to clean sensitive surfaces around my home.

My only complaint is that the bag tends to be a bit "firm", so it doesn't fold up to easily close it all of the time. Once in awhile, I miss closing it entirely and make a slight mess. That's my fault, though.s having a really hard time finding this in stores near me, and I'm extremely happy that Thrive carries it! I hate using other baking sodas because I worry about their aluminum conte

- David A.

Aluminum free

The best thing about this baking soda is that it is one of the only aluminum free baking sodas I have ever been able to find. I like that they specify this on their label.

More companies should follow this path and make it easier for people trying to eat healthy or cut out certain things from their diet. No scanning labels here, and it still works great.

- A. River

The better baking soda choice

I use baking soda a lot in baking, of course. If a recipe calls for it there really is no way to get around it. I also sometimes use it in other homemade projects. I am a very DIY kind of person.

Anyway, I prefer Bob's Red Mill Baking Soda over the regular brands. It's better for you and the environment.

- Patty J.

Good Stuff

I like most all Bob's Red Mill products. This baking soda is a finely ground powder. It mixes evenly with whatever I'm baking. The taste is smooth when it mixes with other ingredients. I use this baking soda in all types of recipes that call for baking soda.
I never knew they really use a grinding mill to produce the baking soda and other items. This is a good value for the price.

- Ora Kim

Better than the rest

I used Red Mill baking soda for the first time last month and won't be going back. I was a big Arm & Hammer fan for years, but it's not all-natural, and as I get older, that's become more important.

I noticed the cakes and cookies I made with this baking soda tasted fresher. They also had a lighter texture and just seemed more flavorful without any aftertaste. I think the fact that it's made from a natural water process is the key. But whatever the case, I love this soda and highly recommend it.

- Mara Denham

Got What I Needed

I have to admit, the price on this was higher than what I pay at the store. In fact, the store's soda is half the price, which can add up because I use baking soda a lot.

But this one's all-natural, which is a huge deal for me. I've kind of gone back to basics in the past year, just trying to eat more organic food and cut out as much processed junk as I can. I like Red Mill, but wish it was a little more affordable.

- Maurice Dover

Solid Product

I use baking soda a lot for making cakes and cookies, but I wanted something that was natural or organic, which I guess is the hip word these days. So I took a chance on Red Mill and haven't been disappointed.

My baking is as good as ever, but I know the soda is all-natural, which helps me feel better about I'm eating. I also use it to calm my stomach when it's upset. The only slight drawback was my last delivery had a tear in the side. Other than that, solid product.

- M. Davis

Cool Baking Soda

Baking soda's kind of like coconut oil because it has so many uses. My wife uses it a lot for baking, whether it's cookies or other pastries, it's great for leavening.

I'm not much for cooking, but I use it as a paste to brush my teeth. It's supposed to have natural cleansing agents that gradually whiten your teeth. I've been using it for a few months, and I've noticed my teeth have less yellow on them. One cool thing about Red Mill's is that the soda absorbs really quickly, no waiting forever when you want a quick natural antacid.

- Morris D

Great Natural Soda

I bake a lot, but I try to be as healthy as possible. Bob's is natural and does the job very well. I know the label used to say 'aluminum free,' but it's changed, because no baking soda has aluminum, so that was a bit misleading.

I also like to use it to cure a sour stomach, or just to keep my digestion at a good level. One teaspoon in a glass of water at night usually does the trick.

- Marilyn Dean

Fine quality!

Very good quality. I would buy it again - I love Bob's Red Mill products - they are pure.
