About Bob Moore of Bob’s Red Mill As the name suggests, Bob’s Red Mill was founded by Bob himself—Bob Moore. Just take a quick glance at any of the products and see his face right on the front. Although the company has an extensive list of food items, Bob has always done his work with the highest commitments to quality, and it shows in every bite. Of course, behind every great man is a great woman, and for Bob that woman is Charlee. They met in 1952 and it became apparent that both were dedicated to creating delicious, premium foods. Charlee sparked the idea for Bob’s Red Mill when she decided to create a healthier lifestyle for her family, starting with giving them natural foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Eventually, twenty-six years after they met, their company was born. The history of the mill Bob had a vision for an operating flour mill that could provide healthy and nutritious food, and it wasn’t until after he and Charlee retired that they found an old mill for sale. It seemed like fate had stepped in, and Bob’s Red Mill was born in Oregon City in 1978. Although, they faced some issues in their early years—such as a fire that completely destroyed the mill only a year after opening. But they both persisted and rebuilt the mill from scratch, featuring some of the best engineering and machinery. Although it’s easy to assume that modern technology is the key to harvesting and producing amazing whole grain options, nothing can compare to old world engineering that would be found in a traditional stone mill. Bob’s mills are similar to the ones that were used in early Roman times—quartz millstones (rather than high-speed rollers) that ensure the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain in tact, packing in wholesome goodness. Why whole grain products matter Are whole grains really all that different from processed ones? The answer is a resounding yes! A processed grain ends up missing some of the most nutritious parts, whereas a whole grain will provide so much more nutritional benefits. A kernel (the edible part of a whole grain) consists of three parts: bran, germ, and endosperm. When a grain is processed, it lacks the bran and the germ, removing dietary fiber, iron, and B vitamins. The whole grains and the higher level of nutrition translates to improved health, and in particular leads to a lower risk of diabetes. It’s believed that this is due to the fiber levels in whole grains, which could help to regulate blood sugar levels. Whole grains like those from Bob’s Red Mill lead to improved digestion and help avoid bloating entirely. One of the benefits of whole grains that surprises some people is the fact that they can help with weight loss. When replacing refined grains with whole grains, this leads to improved weight loss in the belly area. Since belly fat is also linked to increased heart disease, whole grains can reduce that belly and boost heart health in the process.
