If you prefer a cup of tea to a cup of joe, you’re probably familiar with a beloved brew known as chai. Chai is one of those unique beverage blends that has the ability to hover between coffee and tea as it can easily be adapted into latte form or enjoyed as a soothing tea infusion. With a vibrant mix of cinnamon, cardamom, fresh ginger, black pepper, and ground cloves incorporated into caffeinated black tea, chai is known for waking up the senses with its spicy and slightly sweet flavor and putting a little extra pep in your step.
History of Chai
Chai tea (or masala chai as it is commonly known) is steeped in history. The name itself means “spiced tea,” and its origins begin thousands of years ago in an ancient royal court in India. It is believed that the king created chai tea as a cleansing Ayurvedic beverage. In the early days masala chai was made with a variety of warming spices (rather than tea leaves) and was served either hot or cold for medicinal purposes. When the British set up tea plantations in India around 1835, black tea and chai were eventually combined into the fragrant (and caffeinated) brew we know today. And because black tea was costly on its own, chai tea grew in popularity since adding spices, milk, and sugar to the black tea enabled consumers to drink less and helped keep the expense to a minimum.
