Why You’ll Love Fair Trade Dark Chocolate - 88% Cocoa
Chocolate always tastes good—but what if it could do good, too? That’s the mission behind every Endangered Species product, including this “extreme” Black Panther Dark Chocolate Bar made with the highest concentration of pure cocoa (88 percent!).
Endangered Species donates 10 percent of all net profits to charity organizations like Rainforest Trust, American Wildlife Foundation, and the Xerces Society that are involved in conservation efforts. Inside each wrapper are also interesting facts about each animal you are helping to save, including the black panther that inspires this incredibly rich dark chocolate bar.
Environmental and ethical issues are incredibly important to Endangered Species as well, which is why they commit to fair trade practices that honor cocoa farmers in West Africa and support sustainable growing that can impact the Earth.
In addition to being fair trade certified, Endangered Species products are also Non-GMO Project verified, gluten-free, and vegan.
How cocoa is made
Cocoa comes from cacao beans, which look like coffee beans and are grown in hard-shelled pods on trees all over the world, including Africa, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, and other areas with similar tropical climates. Even the smallest variations in geographic location and the manufacturing process can provide different tastes in the finished product.
Generally, cacao beans are first removed from the trees and then left to ferment and dry in the same climate where they’ve been grown. The drying time locks in the unique qualities of the bean and allows them to retain their flavor during transport from the cacao plantation to the manufacturer.
Once arrived at the manufacturing site, the beans are cleaned, roasted, and finely ground to create a powder. Roasting varies with each bean type: Some are roasted for a short period of time at a high temperature, and others are roasted for longer increments at a much lower temperatures—the difference will either keep the natural cacao integrity or produce cocoa (which is a bit sweeter).
For Endangered Species Black Panther Fair Trade Dark Chocolate Bar, the only added ingredients are a little cane sugar, soy lecithin, and vanilla, resulting in a tremendous chocolatey experience that is free of additives, including extra sugar. Each 3 oz. bar only has five grams of natural sugar and is loaded with protein, dietary fiber, and iron, resulting in a more nutritious treat.
The health benefits of chocolate
Chocolate often gets a bad reputation, but this is usually because most of the mass marketed products contain tons of sugar, milk, and flavor additives that take away from the nutritional content and turn it into an empty calorie candy. In its more natural, unprocessed state (like Endangered Species bars), cocoa actually has a ton of nutrients and accompanying health benefits.
- Protein: An essential building block for the body. It creates and repairs hair, nails, bones, muscles, cartilage, and blood.
- Calcium: A nutrient that creates strong, healthy bones and also helps blood to clot, nerves to deliver messages to the rest of the body, and muscles to contract.
- Carotene: Inside the human body, carotene converts into vitamin A, which is vital for good vision, eye health, a hearty immune system, youthful-looking skin, and healthy mucous membranes.
- Riboflavin: Riboflavin is one of eight important B vitamins—B2, to be exact. In general, B vitamins help give the body energy and fuel. B2 is especially important because is an antioxidant, protecting the body from free-radical damage and lowering risks for cancer, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
- Magnesium: Every cell in the human body has magnesium in it. It has anti-inflammatory properties and aids in biochemical reactions performed by enzymes, which provides energy.
- Flavonoids: Flavonoids are fantastic for better blood health. They have been proven to help lower blood pressure and improve overall blood flow to the heart and brain, as well as prevent clots.
- Antioxidants: An antioxidant prohibits or prevents the oxidation of other molecules in the body. Basically, it means that they help to fight the damaging free radicals that cause disease. Although mostly found in fresh fruits and vegetables, cacao actually has more antioxidant makeup than most produce!
What to pair with an extremely dark chocolate bar
For those who love the taste of regular chocolate, taking a big bite out of an 88 percent cocoa bar is going to be an intense experience. This is no milk chocolate bar, after all, so it’s best to enjoy the strong, hearty flavor in small doses—and really that’s all that’s needed to get a chocolatey fix and feel satisfied. Here are a few ideas for pairing with other treats.
Accompanied by fresh fruit or wine
The natural sugars in raw fruits like strawberries and mango or in dried fruits like cranberries or apricots makes a fun way to mix flavors in your mouth. Try a bit of the fruit first, let it rest for a moment on your tongue, and then add in a bite of chocolate and enjoy together. You can follow these same steps with a fruity or oaky red wine, too.
Healthier ice cream does exist! This recipe yields a “raw” ice cream made with cacao powder, Medjool dates, and coconut milk. If you’d rather skip the extra steps to make the caramel sauce, you can just shave a bit of Endangered Species Black Panther Dark Chocolate Bar on top—or go for both!
Moist and sweet, these Paleo muffins taste great right out of the oven and even better the next day. Instead of chocolate chips, break off pieces of Endangered Species Black Panther Dark Chocolate Bar to bake with. This will allow varying sizes of chocolate chunks, giving the finished product a perfectly imperfect homemade texture.
With a little bit of creamy yogurt, some crunchy homemade granola, and nibbles of fruit—this recipe is just begging for a little cocoa, too. Just pair a few shavings of Endangered Species Black Panther Dark Chocolate Bar for the perfect brunch item or midday treat.
Reviews For Fair Trade Dark Chocolate - 88% Cocoa
Based on 35 Reviews
VERY high quality, with a caveat....
Love this super-dark chocolate, but the bar is in 5 x 3 format. Makes it a little tricky to divide into 2 servings per the nutrition facts.
This is my favorite dark chocolate---smooth and not sweet.
Good quality. Love the charity
This bar has become my favorite chocolate bar.
My favorite chocolate
I am a dark chocolate fan, and I think by far this stuff is the best while still being reasonably priced. It's very dark (88% is one of the darkest that I have been able to find) but doesn't taste bitter at all like other ones I've tried. Definitely recommended.
Love the deep chocolate flavor!!!
Dark Chocolet never tasted so good.
88% cocoa is a favorite. So good one square at at a time to quench the need. Another to remind you of how wonderful you are!! Recommend it to everyone.
Best dark chocolate!
I discovered this brand about a year ago and was thrilled to learn that Thrive carries it. Endangered species are worth protecting & the fact that I can support the cause by eating my favorite dessert is outstanding. Thrive's price can't be beat.
Fair Trade 88% Dark chocolate bar
I actually purchased this for a friend but she loved it. She will only eat 88% cacao or higher and she was totally excited about this.
This is the best dark chocolate bar out there. I refuse to live without it.
Great Dark Chocloate!
I often like to have a small piece of dark chocolate after dinner. I like 90% Lindt but it's getting harder to find locally, so I gave this a try. It might become my new favorite! The flavor is rich and complex. I also like that it's scored into tiny cubes so you can break off just a small amount it that's all you really want.
I really enjoyed these chocolate bars. Not very sweet but you certainly can acquire a taste for a less sweet treat loaded with antioxidants.
Love this dark chocolate!
Excellent quality and reasonable price. Will buy again and again.
Nothing else compares and a good price at $2.45
This is unique, smooth, rich in flavor. Some call it bitter— I like it. One fifth of this bar is a perfect combo with a handful of home-roasted almonds... good protein source, mix of fats, high in fiber and Consumer Lab favorably reviewed this chocolate for being higher that most in flavanols and without heavy metal contaminants that some cocoa products have high levels of.
This is a great smooth dark chocolate!
For Serious Dark Chocolate Lover's Only
If your idea of dark chocolate is a Hershey's Dark...well this isn't for you. After all, at 88% cacao, there's just no room for sugar(sweeteners). But if you are a serious chocolate lover and you want a healthy indulgence in every bite, keep a couple of these in your home. It only takes a few bites per day to satisfy so one bar can last an awfully long time.
Dark and Rich
I started buying this brand mostly due to their company values, but the chocolate is just too good to pass up! I buy higher cocoa content due to it having less sugar and I've found that 88% is my stopping point- 90% and higher is just too high for me. 88% cocoa is the perfect percentage for me- give me all the antioxidants!

Dark, velvety, choco-heaven
This is definitely a bar to be appreciated slowly and not to be munched on chunks at a time. This brand manages to maintain a creamy, consistent texture with rich, complex flavors. The chocolate flavor is deliciously intense with significantly less bitterness that comes with the darker chocolates. This is my go-to bar for getting my fix of the health benefits associated with dark chocolate, and I can't stress enough how happy it makes me that they are fair trade. They also donate a portion of their profits to preserving endangered species. It's the ultimate guilt-free treat to indulge in if you care about the workers, the environment, and the nutritional perks of dark chocolate.
At less than $3/bar, this is definitely the most affordable place to get high-quality, sustainably-made chocolate. Thanks Thrive!
Really intense chocolate!
I wasn't aware of the different grades of dark chocolate. I bought this one without knowing how intense one bite would be.
Wow! I couldn't eat another piece until the next day. Superbly bitter and rich. Didn't hate it, but one bar will definitely last me a while. Greatly supportive of the company's cause, however. Wonderful job, Endangered Species!
- Shannon Bryant
Dark Chocolate Goodness!
This chocolate is almost therapeutic for me. Be careful only break off a little pieces or else your taste buds are going to freak out. The chocolate is very very dark but excellent.
Fair Trade products are a high priority of mine because items like this may have been harvested using child labor or by low paid help. Neither is the case for this, as it is Fair Trade. It is also vegan because their is no dairy in it! Its Non-GMO and gluten-fee as well. This chocolate is second to none!
The only reason why I give it 4 stars if because of the shipping cost. I would have added it to a larger order had I known I would be charged shipping.
I will buy this again!
- Myra Saunders
Must have for bitter chocolate lovers!
This is by far the best dark chocolate I've ever had. To make it even better, it is as healthy as chocolate gets! I'm especially happy to support this delicious treat because of how it supports endangered species. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a chocolate with no antioxidants or gluten!
So Very Good!
Great Chocolate Bar from a Great Company!
One of the very best dark-chocolate bars I've ever had. Responsibly sourced, too, which also is very important. Will purchase again and again. :)
I love it - though I am easy to please with dark chocolate. The price is good for chocolate of this caliber and healthy.
Excellent Chocolate from a Great Company
I've always preferred dark chocolate over the milk and definitely more than white chocolate. Although I struggle to find a good, rich, smooth bar of dark chocolate that is not bitter or dry.
About a year ago, I read an article about Fair Trade, what it means for different products and their companies. I had no idea that very low wage earners and sometimes children harvested regular chocolates, and many other foods.
I'm so happy with Thrive as they offer Fair Trade foods and other products, delivered right to my door. As a less expensive alternative to local shops, which are mostly overpriced.

More for me
My kids will not eat dark chocolate, no matter how much of it I buy or how good it is for them. I don't allow milk chocolate in my house, so the only chocolate the kids get is raw cacao. For me, dark chocolate is the best and I have a special place in my heart for Endangered Species chocolate. It's so good and some of the money goes to the wildlife.
- Adelle G
Help the animals
Thank you Thrive Market for this amazing product that helps conservation efforts that save wildlife.
These chocolate bars are some of the best. So many great flavors (and cute critter faces) to choose from. If I could afford it (and my belly could) I would buy one of each!
- Nico Wheat
Just as that black panther's eyes are looking intense on the package, this is some intense dark chocolate. If you don't normally eat dark chocolate I would suggest starting with a different bar. I love it, but dark is my favorite.
Endangered Species bars are so cool. I think I would buy these for gifts if I didn't eat them... but if they are in my house I have to have a taste!
- Jona Rigg
Very very Bitter
I guess I didn't understand that a cacao level about 70 percent means that the chocolate is more and more pure.
That kicked in when I ate a piece of this dark chocolate. It's bitter and hard edged, almost like baker's chocolate. It took me by surprise and it might get you too. The chocolate settles and it's quite flavorful, but it's very strong so be warned.
- Warner D.
Really strong chocolate flavor
If you're not used to dark chocolate at this percentage of cacao, be warned. This isn't your artificially sweetened stuff on the shelf at the local store.
This is as pure a dark chocolate as you'll find on the market, 88 percent cacao and a full, strong taste that packs a punch. But I love it, and I love the company's philosophy. You even get educated because every bar has a wrapper that tells you about the black panther and why it's at risk. Awesome, ethical company that makes the strongest dark chocolate around.
Great company making great chocolate
Endangered Species is an awesome company. They don't just talk about commitment to animals, they're doing something about it.
Ten percent of the sales of this delicious dark chocolate goes to help black panthers around the world. I love that I'm not just eating great dark chocolate, but that some of the money I spend is going to a fantastic cause.
- Willie Dunn
Great for Kids
My kids love the taste of dark chocolate - more than milk chocolate even! This stuff is really good. It has a very intense dark chocolate taste because of its percentage, but it's not intensely bitter or uncomfortably tasting. I like to break this bar into smaller pieces and let the kids snack on it throughout the day as a tiny treat. A little square seems to satisfy them fine at any given time.
My only complaint is that, a couple times, the kids have complained that the chocolate felt oddly crunchier than usual. It's only happened on a couple of bars we've tried, but it's enough to warrant mentioning.
- Marion D.
This is a great nutritional bar.
This is a great nutritional bar. It is made with bittersweet dark chocolate, so they're a bit bitter. If you're a fan of dark chocolate though, you're going to love it. The bar is healthy and made with natural ingredients, and I love the fact that they're both healthy, yet tasty.
- Grant Quinlan
The Endangered Species Black Panther X Dark chocolate bar was so delicious! Yes, it was very dark and somewhat bitter, but not terribly bitter at all. Percentage of sale/profit reportedly goes to helping endangered species.
- A. Paul
Chocolate and beautiful animals - what more could you ask for?
This chocolate is quite dark and intense, but creamy and great for dark chocolate aficionados. Plus, I appreciate anything that makes me feel better about eating chocolate! Yes, I admit I partly buy this brand because I like the pictures of animals, and I love knowing that I'm supporting endangered species through my purchase.
