When we set out to share some tips for how to develop more sustainable habits this Earth Month, we turned to some of our favorite sustainability pros: our very own employees.
Aside from working to provide healthy, organic groceries to our members, many Thrive Market employees also make it a point to live low-waste or environmentally conscious lifestyles. From composting (and even reusing) their food scraps to creating plastic-free personal care routines, here are just a few of the ways Thrivers are fostering more sustainable habits this Earth Month.
“Did you know that you can eat cilantro stems? Instead of throwing them in the trash, I love to hold onto my herb stems (which often just taste like a stronger version of the actual herb with firmer texture) and use them to make sauces, pestos, or, in this case, a nice avocado crema. Bonus if you also have some bruised avocados that you don’t want to throw out!”

“Switching to using reusable menstrual cups instead of pads and tampons is a great way to cut down on — or even eliminate — plastic waste while you’re on your period. I know it seems trickier to clean your menstrual cups while camping or traveling, but I’ve created a whole kit so I can rinse and sanitize my cups no matter how far away I am from home.”

“On days we shoot food in the Thrive Market photo studio, we try to minimize waste wherever we can. This often looks like us reusing and sharing produce between shoots or making little grab-bags of prepared dishes we made. For whatever is leftover, we work with an organization called Compostable, who pick up our scraps and compost them. Even though we are surrounded by concrete in downtown LA, sustainability is a huge priority for us.”

“Owning a dog doesn’t seem like a wasteful endeavor, but over time, all those plastic dog waste bags and synthetic plush toys start to add up. I recently started to take note of all the ways I could make my dog’s daily routine a bit better on the planet, like switching to dog bags made of post-consumer recycled plastic, buying upcycled dog treats, and cutting out stuffed toys (which usually get destroyed and replaced just as quickly as I buy them!) in favor of reusable bones that I can refill with their favorite dog-friendly peanut butter.”
