A few months ago, Beyonce teased that she’d be making a HUGE announcement on “Good Morning America.” The Beyhive was buzzing, overcome with fervor, anticipation, and speculation. Is she dropping a new album? Announcing a world tour? A bun in the oven?
She just wanted us to know that she went vegan—and that’s her secret to looking the way she does. Anti-climactic, for sure. The backlash ensued. But no doubt, she served as inspiration for what a healthy plant-based diet can do.
And guess what? Beyonce is not the lone pioneer of celebrity veganism (although she is No. 1 on our list cause she’s No. 1 on everything). Here are six other animal-loving stars who embody vegan #goals.
A year before Bey got on the cruelty-free bandwagon, Miley had quietly made the switch. On an Instagram post declaring her love for avocados she dropped some hints about her dietary status:
“… you ain’t gottttta eat dead animals! Everything that goes into my body is aliiiiivvvve! To keeeep ME alive! Love this life!” —@mileycyrus
But things became more clear when she appeared on the cover of Paper Magazine in a muddy, nude embrace with her pet pig as a less-than-subtle way to promote her animal advocacy.
Speaking of Miley, her on-again beau, Liam, is vegan, too. If only we could be flies on the wall at a vegan taco Tuesday in their new Malibu pad (at least we know they’d never break out the swatter on us!).
Looks like more and more millennial megastars like Ariana Grande are spreading the message of conscious eating far and wide to their legions of fans. Ariana was galvanized to go vegan after seeing the influential documentary “Forks Over Knives,” and her strong conviction garnered her the title of PETA2’s Sexiest Vegetarian of 2014.
It’s not just the kids who’ve embraced veganism. The iconic ’90s star of “Clueless” is one of the perpetual poster girls for an ethical, plant-based diet. She’s credited her food choices for curing her asthma, insomnia, constipation, and acne. At 39, Alicia maintains the same glow she had as Aerosmith’s anointed video vixen 22 years ago. Today she runs her own vegan lifestyle brand, The Kind Life—a testament to her commitment to cruelty-free living.
Veganism may have once been equated with frail, malnourished bodies—but that’s no longer the case. Longtime veg-head Jared Leto stayed vegan as he trained to bulk up for his upcoming role as The Joker in the film Suicide Squad. A vegan diet can be rich in the carbs and proteins (from tofu, tempeh, seitan, beans, nuts, and legumes) necessary to get max gains, when combined with resistance training.
One of PETA’s most outspoken partners, this “Baywatch” babe has been flying her vegan flag for over 20 years. It’s not a secret that Pamela’s known for her killer bod. And like Beyonce, she’s living proof that noshing on fruits and veggies is one way to keep things tight and right. Not that that’s what it’s all about. Anderson is just one of many vegans passionate about animal rights—a value that permeates her entire lifestyle.
And the list goes on—Lea Michele, Jessica Chastain, Waka Flocka, Russell Simmons, and Rooney and Kate Mara are all celebs you might want to look to for inspiration if you’re thinking about going vegan!
