What is an Ayurvedic Beauty Routine?

Last Update: June 13, 2023

What if you could achieve total wellness, both internally and externally, through one practice? Ayurveda might just be the answer. While Ayurveda is traditionally understood as an ancient form of holistic medicine, you can also incorporate clean, organic Ayurvedic beauty products into your daily routine. That’s where Banyan Botanicals can help.

Inspired by the Ayurvedic principle of living in harmony with nature, Banyan Botanicals creates products that promote the inherent connection between our own health and the health of the world. This commitment is built into their business model—as a Certified B Corporation, they balance purpose with profit and work to meet the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.

What this commitment literally looks like is a 20-acre certified organic farm located in Southern Oregon—also known as the Banyan Botanicals Farm. “We practice sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices, including a polyculture design, crop rotation, and composting, all of which support overall biodiversity,” says Breanna Potts, Editorial Manager at Banyan Botanicals. “All vegetables and herbs grown on our farm are ethically grown, harvested, and filled with the vitality of the land and the people who nurture them.”

Many herbs are harvested without regard for long-term effects on the environment, but Banyan is working to reverse this trend. “Tragically, many widely used medicinal plants and Ayurvedic herbs are threatened and in danger of being unavailable, either through extinction or protective legislation,” Potts explains. “Our organic herbs are grown by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources, and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.”

The result of these thoughtful practices? High-quality Ayurvedic products. “When it comes to beauty, you want to use products that are high quality, healthy, and organic. In fact, if you wouldn’t eat it, you probably shouldn’t put it on your skin,” Potts says. “You may have heard of the doshas in Ayurveda (vata, pitta, and kapha). These three energies make up our unique body type, or constitution. So from a beauty perspective, the key to balance will vary from person to person depending on their doshas.” Whether your skin needs more moisture, cleansing, or nourishment, Banyan Botanicals offers a range of products that are designed to meet each person’s unique preferences and needs.

Ayurveda’s approach to healing even extends to beauty. “Ayurveda upholds the concept that beauty begins with the health of the system as a whole,” Potts explains. “By tending to the health and balance of the inner body, we will naturally radiate beauty on the outside.” This philosophy guides the creation of all Banyan Botanicals products, which Potts calls “nourishing, cleansing, and deliciously indulgent ways to incorporate the practice of holistic beauty into your routine.”

Ayurveda for oral care:

One of our all-time customer favorites is Daily Swish, which is used for oil-pulling! It’s a combination of sesame and coconut oils infused with Ayurvedic herbs, and we have it available in two flavors: mint and cinnamon. Based on traditional Ayurvedic practices, oil pulling is a way to support overall oral health, remove toxins and moisturize the mouth, and freshen the breath.

To use, place approximately 2–3 teaspoons of oil in your mouth and gently swish back and forth, occasionally pulling the oil through the teeth. Continue for at least a few minutes and up to twenty minutes, then spit out the oil and rinse your mouth with warm water.

Ayurveda for the skin:

Beauty Balm is another customer favorite that firms and rejuvenates the tissues while bringing deep moisture and softness to the skin. Featuring shatavari and ashwagandha in a rich base of ghee, Beauty Balm can be applied anywhere on the body that needs to be immersed in moisture.

We get creative with Beauty Balm, using it as a skin cream, eye cream, moisturizer for dry and aging skin, hand cream, lip balm, elbow and knee moisturizer, nail and cuticle cream, and as a deep moisturizer for the feet and heels.

Ayurveda for the hair:

Our Healthy Hair supplement contains traditional herbs that promote the growth of thick and lustrous hair while supporting the hair’s natural strength, color, and shine. Made with some of the most well-renowned herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia for supporting hair growth, proper liver function, and healthy blood, this product helps to promote the proper conditions within the body for a thick, lustrous mane of hair on the head.

Applying herbal oils to the hair and scalp is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that has been used for hundreds of years to maintain a thick, lustrous head of hair. Our nourishing Healthy Hair Oil brings you the powerful effects of the top three Ayurvedic herbs known to have a special affinity for the hair, slow-decocted by traditional methods into a base of sesame and coconut oils, and then infused with hibiscus flowers.

To use, apply the oil to your hair and scalp and massage gently into the hair follicles. Leave in for at least 30 minutes, then wash out by applying shampoo to dry hair and then rinsing. The oil can also be left in overnight for a deep treatment. For best results, repeat this process weekly.
