We’re Working to Raise $20 Million for Food Equality by 2030

Last Update: August 14, 2023

Democratizing healthy living has always been a part of our core mission at Thrive Market. In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated food inequality in the U.S., we made a pledge to raise $10 million to provide healthy groceries for those in need by 2025.

Thanks to the generosity of our member community, we reached that goal two years early — and now it’s time to set a new one. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re aiming to raise $20 million for food equality by 2030

A Look Back at Our Food Equality Now Campaign

With that $10 million, we were able to provide much more than just healthy groceries. Here’s the breakdown of where your donations went:

Thrive Gives

Our Thrive Gives program is a way to provide free Thrive Market memberships to those who need them. With each membership you purchase, we’re able to donate one to a low-income family, first responder, nurse, teacher, service member, or student. To date, we’ve donated 2.8 million Thrive Gives memberships, and we were able to provide more than $3 million in grocery shopping budgets thanks to your generous donations at checkout.

Support for Our Nonprofit Partners

Over the years, we’ve partnered with like minded nonprofits to expand our reach even further. FoodCorps is one of those organizations. FoodCorps that selects high-need communities across the country to connect kids to better-for-you food in school. They also provide gardening instruction, cooking lessons, and other nutrition education to ensure that kids understand the value of healthy food. “Food traditions can happen in school,” says Tiffany Knight, a FoodCorps service member in Arkansas. “Some [students] may not be able to have a meal with their family, but they can have a meal with their school family. School lunch can be a time of gathering.” To date, our partnership with FoodCorps has helped 17,500 kids learn about healthy food in school.

We also partnered with FoodCycle LA, a local nonprofit that works to divert wasted produce from landfills and redirect it to communities in need throughout Los Angeles. To kick off the partnership, volunteers from Thrive Market distributed 500 boxes of healthy groceries to the Watts community in LA, along with FoodCycle LA’s fresh produce offerings. “I believe food has this power and value beyond just being fuel,” says Nancy Beyda, Founder of FoodCycle LA. “When you provide food to people there is an element of caring. It has the potential to do so much good. As we shift our way of seeing food, we have the opportunity as a culture to reexamine some of the ways we tell people we care about them.”

Thanks to donations from members like you, we’ve been able to distribute close to $5.6M in healthy groceries to families in need through these partnerships with FoodCycle LA, FoodCorps, and Baby2Baby, a nonprofit that provides children living in poverty with basic necessities.

Disaster & Humanitarian Relief

When the COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the inequalities many Americans face when it comes to having access to healthy food, we started to rally our community and start our COVID-19 Relief Fund. By the end of 2020, we were able to raise more than $1.7 million to provide 31,000 families with healthy, organic food from Thrive Market.

We were so inspired by the generosity of our community that we wanted to continue to raise funds for disaster and humanitarian relief. Over the next few years, we donated more than $2.8 million in nourishing meals and essentials to communities in need, like those affected by the earthquake in Turkey, the conflict in Ukraine, extreme weather in Texas, Hurricane Ida in Louisiana, and wildfires in Australia.
