Meet Moon Juice Founder Amanda Chantal Bacon

Amanda Chantal Bacon is a world-traveling chef, mother, sustainable lifestyle leader, and passionate food educator. On top of all that, she’s also the force behind Moon Juice, a “cosmic beacon for those seeking out beauty, wellness, and longevity.” By using plant-sourced adaptogens and raw, medicinal foods, Moon Juice has grown immensely since its first store opened in 2011 in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Here, Bacon shares what makes Moon Juice different, her personal health journey, and how you can incorporate the brand’s cult-favorite Moon Dusts into more of your everyday recipes.

What inspired you to start Moon Juice?

I was sick as a child and allopathic medicine offered no relief. At age five, an Ayurvedic told me I needed to cut out sugar, wheat, and dairy. Within 72 hours of making those adjustments to my diet, I felt like a completely different person. It changed my life.

As a young adult, I traveled the world, went to culinary school, and eventually wound up in fine dining, working under amazing chefs. I was working in kitchens and on the side, studying the power of healing. Working in restaurants was an amazing experience, but I eventually felt a pull to bring the plants that had helped me so much to a larger audience, which is where Moon Juice comes in.

I started Moon Juice because I wanted to bring the power of plants to more people. We are truly committed to bringing health and happiness to people and the planet through plants.

Take us through a day in your life. From starting your mornings to ending your evenings, what do you eat throughout the day to keep you focused and fueled?

Every morning, I take SuperYou, SuperHair, a prenatal, Omegas, and Vitamin D. I’m eight months pregnant, so I’m certainly eating more, and more often. It’s forced me to pack lunches and snacks for the office. In the morning, I’m making breakfast for myself and my family, packing my son’s lunch, now packing food for myself, and eyeballing what I’ll be able to prepare for dinner. As a family, we pretty much avoid grains. I stave off an auto-immune condition, so I work hard at keeping inflammation down. My husband doesn’t have an auto-immune condition, but grains cause inflammation and joint pain for him. We focus on healthy fats, vegetables, and protein. All get mixed and matched with green juice, almond milk from Moon Juice, almond butter, bee pollen, Adaptogenic Protein, Moon Dusts, snacks from Moon Juice, and seasonal produce.

Staples in our house:

For someone who is new to medicinal foods, where should they start?

Listen to your body. My top tip for most is reducing stress chemistry and inflammation in the body. Some simple ways to do this are by using SuperYou in the morning, avoiding refined sugars, limiting grains, and getting ample amounts of healthy fat, protein, and vegetables.

If someone is new to Moon Juice as a brand, what are the most important things you’d want them to know?

We obsessively source by carefully selecting each of our ingredients to ensure the highest quality ingredients with maximum effectiveness. We work with herbalists and scientists to formulate our products. They are energetically balanced, intentionally blended, and rigorously tested. Our products are clean and only include necessary ingredients, no fillers. Our blends make it easy to incorporate into daily life. It’s as simple as taking two capsules or adding a dose of Moon Dust to your daily coffee or smoothie.

Moon Juice recently expanded into topical products. Why topical, and why now?

Up until my mid-thirties, my beauty routine consisted of a bar of soap and a toothbrush. I started to notice changes in my skin and realized that I needed to care for my skin just as I would any other organ. I was shocked at how difficult it is to find products that are both clean and efficacious. I couldn’t find anything that was clean and could also make a difference in my skin.

What’s next for the topical product line?

We have two new skincare products launching later this year. Both are essentials that everyone needs. Stay tuned!

What is your favorite way to use the Holy Yoni oil?

Love your yoni like you love your face! Use after shower for daily care. I also use it on the ends of my hair when they need a little hydration, and on my eyes and lips.

What do you love most about Thrive Market?

I love the supplement section. I take a fistful of supplements twice daily, so being able to receive a discount is a big deal. Also, love the keto and paleo sections. It’s thrilling to have these now be normal, mass food movements.

What is your secret kitchen weapon, and how do you use it?

Grass-fed ghee. Whether it’s my morning tonic, soup, bowl, or broth, I add a teaspoon of ghee. Ghee helps the body assimilate herbs and adds healthy fat for the brain, nervous system, and hormone production. While you cannot specifically taste the ghee, anything it touches is delightfully enhanced.

My Morning Tonic
8 ounces warm almond milk
1 teaspoon Sex Dust (or any Moon Dust)
1 teaspoon raw cacao
1 teaspoon grass-fed ghee

Blend on high for 10 seconds.
