Play-Doh is pretty much a staple of early childhood playtime. From the squishy, moldable texture, to the iconic smell, down to the bright colors, it appeals to all of the senses and can keep creative little ones preoccupied for hours. (OK, maybe not an entire hour, but you’ll take what you can get, right?)
Inevitably, it’s going to end up in your kid’s mouth, and although commercial play-doh is relatively safe, it still contains some funky additives that you probably don’t want your kiddo chewing on. Plus, parents of children with wheat or gluten sensitivities have to be super careful because it contains flour.
Parenting expert Zelana Montminy has the solution: Make your own gluten-free play-doh with , zero added chemicals. With just six ingredients (most of which you probably already have in your pantry), it comes together fast enough to satisfy even the most impatient children. The best part? Your little monsters can help!
Here Montminy shows us exactly how easy it is to make colorful play-doh at home—in less than five minutes.
½ cup rice flour
½ cup arrowroot starch
½ cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup water mixed with organic food coloring
Add all ingredients to large skillet or heat-safe pot.
Over medium-low heat, stir together mixture until it starts to pull away from the sides, about 3 to 5 minutes. Once dough has formed, transfer to cool, flat surface.
Knead dough for 1 minute to get the right consistency. Store in airtight container for up to four months.
