Why You’ll Love Almond Meal Flour

With the growing number of people that have an allergy or intolerance to gluten, cooking and baking can be difficult with trying to find ingredients that everyone can tolerate and eat. One of the most common kitchen staples, flour, is in everything from breads to baked goods and pizza. But it’s also one of the biggest culprits of digestive issues for people with gluten sensitivities since it’s made by milling wheat.

There is an alternative, though. Bob’s Red Mill Almond Meal Flour is a nearly identical substitute that allows everyone to enjoy tasty biscuits, cookies, and cake. Not only is almond meal naturally gluten-free (it’s made solely from the nut, which is a safe food item), the products from Bob’s Red Mill are processed and packed in a facility that is completely gluten-free, too, so there’s no risk of cross-contamination.

Almond meal flour is a wholesome and tasty option that can add texture and flavor to many different types of foods, and also comes chock full of nutritional benefits and dietary perks that make it a vital part of the path towards better health.

Almond meal flour nutrition

This amazing cooking flour substitute is made from a single ingredient, pure almonds. They are blanched to remove the skins, and then ground to a fine powdery texture. Because of its raw, unprocessed state, Bob’s Red Mill Almond Meal Flour is a reliable source of:

  • Fiber
  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Vitamin E
  • Manganese

Every quarter cup serving also contains a healthy dose of monosaturated fats and very low quantities of carbohydrates, which means less unwanted calories. Almond flour also has a decent amount of calcium in every serving for an added nutritional benefit.

In addition to being gluten-free, the low carbohydrate count means Bob’s Red Mill Almond Meal Flour easily fits into Paleo diets and other reduced carb meal plans.

Health benefits of almonds

Almonds are a potent health food that have been studied and linked to important benefits when consumed on a regular basis. These are just some of the ways that almonds (and almond flour) can have a beneficial impact on diet and lifestyle:

  • Almonds and heart disease. Eating almonds provides a good amount of healthy cholesterol that comes from the monosaturated fats. Multiple studies have shown a link between almonds and a lower risk for developing heart disease (particularly when the nut is used to replace carbs, as in Bob’s Red Mill Almond Flour). Additionally, the presence of vitamin E can also be attributed to the prevention of heart disease and a reduced risk of associated problems.

  • Almonds and diabetes. Almonds have a low glycemic index, so unlike traditional carbs, they won’t lead to blood sugar spikes after finishing a meal. Over time that can help ward off diabetes. Almonds and their byproducts also release antioxidants into the body, giving further protection against diabetes and various cardiovascular problems.

  • Almonds and high blood pressure. A serving of almonds (or almond flour) will contain a considerable amount of potassium and just trace amounts of sodium. This sensitive balance helps to avoid hypertension and atherosclerosis.

  • Almonds and weight. For a time, people avoided nuts out of fear that they might contribute to weight gain. As it turns out, the exact opposite seems to be true. Studies have shown that participants who consume almond products at least two times a week are actually at a lower risk for gaining weight. The combination of cardiovascular benefits and feeling full (which means less desire to graze during the day) makes almonds an ideal choice for in-between meals.

  • Almonds and energy levels. Feeling sluggish by 3 p.m.? Eating almonds can actually help. They contain the nutrients riboflavin, copper, and manganese, which experts have found to be crucial in activating energy where it is needed the most in the body. So, including almond products in your daily diet can lead to better muscle performance and more sustainable energy.

Almond meal flour recipes

Bob’s Red Mill Almond Meal Flour can be used as a direct substitute for traditional wheat flour in almost any situation. Try these ideas to get started:

Rosemary Almond Flour Biscuits

Flaky biscuits can still be yours with this recipe that combines almond flour with organic raw honey and finely chopped rosemary leaves for just the perfect touch of sweetness. Spread with jam or put some fried chicken in the middle for a delectable taste that will make you forget they are also gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Blueberry Muffins

There’s nothing quite like taking warm blueberry muffins out of the oven, and enjoying the smell for hours. This recipe is adapted so that gluten-free eaters can enjoy them, too. This dozen is made with almond flour, cinnamon, cardamom, raw honey, melted ghee, vanilla extract, and of course the super fruit.

Paleo Cinnamon Raisin Bread

Breads are not off-limits, gluten-free eaters. Try this classic example that uses almond flour and cashew butter with cinnamon, apple cider vinegar, and raisins. No yeast and no kneading required!

Paleo Primavera Quiche

Savory dishes can benefit from the use of almond flour, too. This Instagram-worthy brunch staple is bursting with greens like asparagus, broccolini, peas, and zucchini baked up in a warm almond-thyme crust. It’s also dairy-free!

Vegan Chickpea Patties

Get a taste of the Mediterranean with these fried chickpea patties that are coated in almond flour. Easy to make and super delicious, they are great as an appetizer with some homemade hummus and as a sandwich wrapped up in gluten-free pita and drizzled with yogurt sauce, parsley, and cucumbers.

Great Flour Substitute!

I'm diabetic so cutting wheat flour out of my diet is crucial. I use this Almond flour in meatloaf, or to fry chicken, and it adds a lovely nutty flavor to the dishes! I also found a recipe to mix it with chickpea flour and potato starch to make bread that works out very well, so I can have toast without having to worry about my blood sugar level too much.

I've tried some other almond flours before that were clumpy and had to be carefully sifted, but I just mix this one with a fork a bit before using. I've been buying Bob's Red Mill for a few years now, and the high quality is consistent. This is definitely my favorite brand!

- Evey Scott

Great Face Mask and Cleanser!

It may sound crazy but I love mixing about a tablespoon of this almond meal with water to make a great mask and facial cleanser! It creates a mildly exfoliating texture and a great mask for acne. I have noticed a huge change in my skin and even my family and friends have asked what I'm using. I've tried countless skin products in the past, including home remedies, and this is definitely the most effective for me!

- Carrie Soto

Great for baking breads!

The mild almond taste in this meal/flour is quite delightful. It is gluten free and grainy so most suited for baking bread.

It can become slightly difficult when baking finer recipes, such as Macarons and muffins, but mixing it with other flours can result in a less soggy product.

- Pam Sparks

Awesome alternative for wheat-free baking

Almond flour can be pricey if you can't get a good deal on it. Normally I have to buy in bulk and even though the packaging makes it easy to keep fresh, it just sits in my cupboards forever. However, I found it here and their single bag is cheaper than the bulk rate I used to buy it for!
As for the almond flour itself, I love Bob's Red Mill. They're such a great and honest brand and they have so many flour alternatives to offer! Their almond flour is a staple in my house and I use it to make healthier treats for me and my kids. It's gluten-free and the nuttiness lends itself really well to low-sugar baking so that I don't have to sacrifice flavor. Also makes great breading and stuffing!

- L. Pearson

Gluten-Free but Not Organic Almonds

I bought this Almond Meal because I wanted to make a few gluten-free bakery items. I love using alternatives and this is one of the best I have found. It holds up as expected in the mixer and oven. I would buy it again.

My only reservation about using this specific brand is that the almonds are not certified organic. I for one, really only wanted to avoid gluten. If eating 100% organic is your up most priority- you may want to buy another brand.

- Wilbert Munoz

Great for Baking

Great for baking (paleo breads, pizza crust) and it adds a nice fuller taste to the baked goods.

- Jeanne

Bob's Red Mill Almond Meal

Great product. Makes great pie crust and good in muffins.

- Thrive User

Lori M.

This is one of my favorite gluten-free substitutes for wheat flour. This is such a great value! Far cheaper than buying it locally or anywhere else online.

- Lori

Great Gluten Free Flour

We are strictly gluten free in our house and we all love the almond meal/flour. We have used it for years. I became a member on Thrive market a few months ago and searched for it almost immediately. It came right up and I couldn't believe the price! It was a good $4.50 or more cheaper that what I had been spending for YEARS at the market. I love it! I have saved so much by joining!

- S. Tines

Almond Joy

We love almonds in our home, so when my wife told me she had found me a gluten free option that included almonds-I was pretty on the bus to trying it. I am not sorry that she got this flour one bit! It has a discreet almond flavor and she knows just the way to use it so that I like it in every recipe she uses it in. She bought it here on Thrive and saved us a ton of money, so here I am to get us some more! I am really loving this flour!

- Stephen D.

Nutty Flavor

I really like the slightly nutty flavor of this flour. I also love how well it thickens my gravy and tastes in my cookies. It has been a great addition to my kitchen and I have really enjoyed playing with it an other flours to find the very best mix. A really great gluten free flour.

- Star Grace

Healthy Flour

This is a pretty great low carb flour. It tastes good in baked goods, especially when mixed with other flours. I like that it is both gluten free AND low carb because those are both things I am very conscience of. It is much cheaper here on Thrive Market than at home, so I am happy to buy it.

- S. Dwight

Different Texture

The texture of this flour was different than any other I have tried. It was a little rough. It was, however really good for mixing with other flours, I like to stick primarily to those made by Bob's Red Mill because it is a brand I trust. It isn't so rough when added to baked goods like breads and cookies, so it is good. Plus the slight almond flavor tastes good in cookies. A pretty good flour once you get used to the texture.

- Sara T.

Texture is rougher than I expected

No doubt almond meal flour is healthy, especially if you're going gluten free. But you have to get used to the rough texture. I guess you have to mix and match with other healthy flours.

But I made muffins that came out much grittier tasting than I wanted. I know it's made of raw almonds, but still, I wanted a smoother more refined results and I didn't quite get that.

- Bitsy

Low Carb Flour

If you're cutting out carbs, and you want an alternative to wheat flour, this is the flour to buy. It has a great texture, comes out nicely when you bake, and thickens sauces and stews without adding sugar and empty carbs. It's great for my lifestyle, especially since I'm thinking about going gluten free.

- Brandon Kane

Price is right for great flour

I use almond flour a lot. Mostly for baking almond cookies and macaroons. They come out so flavorful, without any grit or hardness.

I joined Thrive about two months ago, wondering what I would get for my membership. Well, here's something funny. Amazon sells this for $12.45. Thrive? Four dollars less. Do the research, and you'll see a ton of stuff on Thrive that beats Amazon prices hands down. Thank you Thrive, love what you're doing!

- Barbara K.

Great for macaroons!

I can make fantastic macaroons with this almond meal flour and they are healthier than any other kind of flour I've used.

I've noticed that you have to mix this with some other flour, wheat if you're not on a gluten free diet, or coconut flour if you are. It really shines when blended because it has more texture.

- Brion

Gluten free friendly flour

Well I bought this to bake and cook as my husband was put on a gluten free diet. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I know almonds are very healthy.

This flour is ground from raw unbleached almonds and it's got a nice texture. It's a matter of mixing with other gluten free flours to get the right blend. But so far, both my husband and I love the results. Baked goods taste lighter and have a slight nutty taste that is very subtle but awesome.

- Bethany Kennedy

LOVE almonds!

My husband and I both love almonds. We eat the nuts, we have them in salads and so much more. When I first went gluten-free it seemed like there were only the options of corn products and rice products.

Now that I know more, and there is more available, I have adopted many products, like this almond flour from Bob's Red Mill. We use it in almost all of our GF baking mixes, especially for cookies!

- Vera Briganti

Great addition

When I am baking from scratch I like to have some of this on hand for mixing in my gluten free mix. The price is a little steep, so I don't use it very often though. I do love that Thrive Market offers great discounts on items and makes it a little easier to stock up on things I normally can't afford.

I wish that there were some gluten free flours that could be used alone, and not in a mixture. But at least this way I get enough to last a while.

- Virgie D

Chicken Breading Wonder

I really love to have breaded chicken, but after my wife was diagnosed with a gluten allergy, I've had to mostly give up my love of breaded chicken to avoid upsetting her when I eat it. I've been looking for some alternatives, and this has been perfect for the couple times I've used it so far. I've been breading our skinless chicken breast in this, and while it's not the same as I'm used to, it mostly satisfies her and I's craving for breaded chicken. Would recommend.

- Benny

Great for gluten-free and breading

While I seriously wish alternative flours were as versatile as wheat flour, I have to give praise to Bob's Red Mill for their excellent products. Even if I have to buy a myriad of other flours for my gluten-free diet I can rely on them for the best stuff out there.

There is something this flour is good for on it's own though. It is magnificent as a replacement for breading on fish, chicken and other fried goodies. I even love using it to make homemade cheese sticks!

- Erich B.

Better for baking

I combine all of my own flour mixes when I bake, and I love to bake. I like to stick to a healthy, gluten-free and organic diet whenever I can. Bob's Red Mill makes some great products.

I use this almond flour in a combination flour mix which I use mainly for muffins and cookies. It works great and it tastes great too.

- Shaun

Bob's Red Mill wins again!

I quite often find my cart stuffed with Bob's Red Mill products ever since I went gluten-free 3 years ago. They are a go to staple for my pantry when it comes to baking.

This almond meal flour is wonderful. It blends well with my other flour choices to use when I make cookies, cakes and more. It's a bakers dream!

- Stephanie S.

A necessary baking ingredient at an unbeatable price

I love using almond flour in gluten-free baking, especially for French Macaroons!

Normally, I find almond flour to bee too expensive - but Thrive's price is very reasonable!
