Crown Prince

Crown Prince (4)

Crown Prince has specialized in canning seafood to preserve freshness and provide essential nutrients like calcium and iron, with a strong commitment to sustainability as evidenced by multiple certifications. Family-owned and operated, the company focuses on delivering high-quality, eco-friendly seafood products and reducing its carbon footprint through initiatives like emission reductions and renewable energy use.

Crown Prince has been in the fishing business since 1948, and believes canning is the best way to preserve seafood. With the exception of anchovies (which need to be stored in a cool place for no more than 18 months), canned seafood has a shelf life of many years, and can help you add essential nutrients like calcium and iron to your diet on a regular basis. With certifications from the Marine Stewardship Council, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Food and Agriculture Organization, National Fisheries Institute, and more, Crown Prince’s focus on sustainability is a hallmark of the brand.

The History of Crown Prince

Today, Crown Prince remains a United States-based, family-owned business, run by three generations of the Hoffman family. The brand got its start in the late 1940s, and since then has developed an impressive set of supplier standards and sought-after fish from well-managed fisheries around the world. Here are a few examples:

  • Alaskan Salmon is wild-caught by a salmon fishery certified sustainable by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute.
  • Yellowfin Tuna and Skipjack Tuna is wild-caught in the Maldives and certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.
  • Albacore Tuna is wild-caught by pole and pine and rated as a Best Choice from the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program.

Crown Prince Company Mission

Crown Prince wants to put seafood on your dinner table in 10 minutes or less—without sacrificing nutrition or taste. In addition to sourcing some of the world’s highest quality seafood and making it easy to use at home, Crown Prince is committed to sustainability efforts at all stages of its supply chain. In 2010, the company established an in-house “Green Team” to focus on environmental impact and devise a plan to reduce its carbon footprint. Here are a few of the milestones so far:

  • Set a target to reduce emissions from electricity usage by 100%, and signed up for the Southern California Edison (SCE) Summer Discount Plan, which allows SCE to cycle air conditioners as needed to offset electricity usage. As of 2017, Crown Prince has reduced 44 percent of its market-based electricity emissions since 2010.
  • Measures Scope 3 emissions (like employee commuting, shipping, and business travel) and conducted a greenhouse gas inventory to better understand which operational activities created the most emissions.
  • Reports sustainability efforts to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an independent organization based in London, which works to support greenhouse gas reduction by both cities and businesses.

Top Crown Prince Products

Skinless Boneless Sardines in Oil

These small fish pack a big nutritional punch thanks to the calcium and iron in every bite. Not to mention, every can contains 24 grams of protein to help keep you full. Cold-pressed extra virgin olive adds extra richness, and you can enjoy them in salads, wraps, chowders, or simply mashed on toast with slices of avocado.

Anchovy Fillets

Anchovies can sometimes be an acquired taste. They’re a briny fish with lots of pungent flavor, but that’s why it’s important to remember a little goes a long way. When used as a flavor enhancer, they slip right into pasta sauces, Caesar salad dressings, or bread crumb toppings, adding just the right amount of punch without being detectable.
