The History of Divine Chocolate
Divine Chocolate got its start in the 1990s after the liberalization of the cocoa market in Ghana. With the guidance of Nana Frimpong Abrebrese, a representative on the Ghana Cocoa Board, farmers soon realized there was an opportunity to organize and sell cocoa to an international market. Eventually, a cooperative was formed by the name of Kuapa Kokoo (which now has over 85,000 farmer members). Members get a share in the company’s profits and a say regarding important brand decisions. By 1998, Divine Chocolate was created as the first ever Fair Trade chocolate bar, crafted from the Kuapa cocoa, and designed for the mass market.

Divine Chocolate is on a mission to empower disenfranchised farmers and give a voice to all 85,000 members of the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana. In fact, Kuapa has been so successful in its movement that members have organized in approximately 1,400 village societies in Ghana. Along with the strength of their movement comes a dedication to providing the highest quality chocolate in the market.
