It’s not easy to pass up a piece of exceptionally delicious chocolate. It’s especially not easy to pass up chocolate when its proceeds work to empower over 85,000 farmers in Ghana. Divine Chocolate is not your ordinary sweet treat. This cooperative-based brand not only provides some of the highest quality chocolate on the market but it’s on a mission to enable Ghana cocoa farmers to finally enjoy the success of their hard work. By streamlining production and export measures and working to give each of its members a voice in the company, Divine Chocolate is proving that Fair Trade can also come with a very sweet reward for both manufacturers and customers alike.
The History of Divine Chocolate
Divine Chocolate got its start in the 1990s after the liberalization of the cocoa market in Ghana. With the guidance of Nana Frimpong Abrebrese, a representative on the Ghana Cocoa Board, farmers soon realized there was an opportunity to organize and sell cocoa to an international market. Eventually, a cooperative was formed by the name of Kuapa Kokoo (which now has over 85,000 farmer members). Members get a share in the company’s profits and a say regarding important brand decisions. By 1998, Divine Chocolate was created as the first ever Fair Trade chocolate bar, crafted from the Kuapa cocoa, and designed for the mass market.
Divine Chocolate Company Mission
Divine Chocolate is on a mission to empower disenfranchised farmers and give a voice to all 85,000 members of the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana. In fact, Kuapa has been so successful in its movement that members have organized in approximately 1,400 village societies in Ghana. Along with the strength of their movement comes a dedication to providing the highest quality chocolate in the market.
Benefits of Divine Chocolate
When you purchase a Divine Chocolate product, you are supporting a wide network of farmers through the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative. The cooperative works to streamline the production and export process as much as possible, which includes weighing, bagging, and transporting cocoa to the market and even carrying out necessary legal paperwork for its many members. The goal of Kuapa is to ensure that its activities are transparent, accountable, and democratic (and as easy on farmers as possible). In addition, sales from Divine Chocolate support investments in women’s training and mentoring in cocoa farming through the co-op, which also happens to be a Certified B Corp. As for the chocolate itself, here’s what you can expect from every Divine bar:
- Fair trade cocoa grown by family farmers in Ghana
- No artificial flavors
- Natural ingredients
- 100% pure cocoa butter
- No palm oil or soy
