While attending Columbia Business School in 2003, founder Shazi Visram watched a good friend struggle to find healthy food options for her twins. It inspired her to create a fully organic and environmentally-friendly food company to help make her friend’s life—and the lives of thousands of other parents—much easier. The brand is now known for specializing in baby and toddler food that’s both healthy and delicious.
After the initial spark of a business idea, Happy Family officially launched its line of minimally processed frozen and organic baby food on Mother’s Day 2006. A few years later, Happy Family was named “Rockstar of the New Economy” by Fast Company, and CEO Shazi Visram was honored as Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in New York. Today, the brand makes organic food for babies, toddlers, kids, and even recently launched an adults line so the whole family can benefit.
The mission of Happy Family is to use nutrition to help change the trajectory of children’s health. And it’s not just a business—Happy Family takes an active role in addressing childhood nutrition so all kids can thrive. Happy Family has been a certified B Corp since 2011, and proudly organizes a nutrition education program that delivers workshops, materials, and funding to organizations researching childhood nutrition. The brand has committed to making 100 percent of its packaging reusable by 2025, and is well on its way to fulfilling this goal by using recycled material in its packaging to minimize environmental impact. Happy Family also composts its food waste and offsets 100 percent of the carbon emissions from its offices and employee travel.
To create its signature recipes (that are both kid- and adult-approved), Happy Family partners with a team of dietitians, pediatricians, and children’s health experts.
