Mavuno Harvest (10)

Mavuno Harvest offers ethically sourced dried fruit snacks that support struggling farmers across sub-Saharan Africa by purchasing and drying their produce, thereby improving their economic stability. Founded by Phil Hughes, the company provides high-quality, organic snacks with no added sugars, while helping farmers maximize their harvests and earn a better income.

Mavuno Harvest sells ethically sourced dried fruit snacks that help struggling farmers across sub-Saharan Africa make a profit and get the most from their harvests. Their products also taste great and are incredibly healthy.

The History of Mavuno Harvest

While serving as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Kenya from 2003 to 2005, Phil Hughes came up with an idea to help poor farmers in rural sub-Saharan Africa. In parts of the region where agriculture is one of the only ways to make money, wasted harvests are extremely common, leaving some farmers with as little as two dollars a day. Phil developed a company that works with small cooperatives in the region to purchase and dry fresh fruit from local farmers and sell it as a healthy snack in America.

Today, Phil’s company, Mavuno Harvest, has two drying facilities in Africa and helps farmers across the region sell their fruit.

Mavuno Harvest Company Mission

Mavuno is the Swahili word for “harvest,” and that’s exactly what Mavuno Harvest allows farmers to take advantage of. Through their products, Mavuno Harvest connects farmers in sub-Saharan Africa with a larger market for their fruit. Having a partner like Mavuno Harvest helps farmers achieve economic stability in ways they couldn’t before, and allows them to invest back into their businesses, as well as their communities.

Fruit drying is essential to Mavuno Harvest’s operation. By drying the fruit, Mavuno Harvest can buy in bulk and preserve some produce to sell as snacks year round. This helps farmers sell off their full inventory, which is rare in many parts of Africa. In fact, ordinarily, farmers on average only sell about 30% of what they harvest. Not with Mavuno Harvest!

The company is also dedicated to bringing its customers high-quality, fully organic products that feature no additional sugar or other processing.
