What happened when a trio of co-workers-turned-friends started a casual conversation about pads and tampons? They decided to start a company. And it’s a good thing too, because studies show that conventional period care products are made with potentially toxic chemicals like styrene, acetone, and chloromethane to name a few. A 2014 study by Women’s Voices for the Earth tested four leading products and discovered that “both scented and unscented Always pads emit toxic chemicals, including chemicals identified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Toxicology Program, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and the State of California Environmental Protection Agency as carcinogens, and reproductive and developmental toxins.” The study also indicated that none of these chemicals are disclosed on the packaging or available on the manufacturer’s website.
The History of Rael
Rael was founded by three friends who met while working in the film industry. They bonded over a shared interest in helping women avoid toxic chemicals that are so prevalent in conventional tampons and pads. All the founders grew up in Korea and immigrated to Southern California with their families. They all agreed that they wanted to incorporate Korea’s high-tech design advancements with organic cotton grown in the U.S.
Rael Company Mission
Rael is a nontoxic and eco-friendly feminine care brand that combines safe materials with the latest technology. For example, Rael omitted the plastic cover found on many conventional pads because it can irritate women with sensitive skin and in some cases, may cause a rash. It also manufacturers its pads and tampons in South Korea because it’s known for producing the safest and most hygienic feminine care products.
Benefits of Rael
Before settling on Texas as the location to grow its organic cotton, Rael’s research and development team searched the country for farms that met their standards. GMO Answers reports that 75 percent of all cotton produced worldwide in 2015 was genetically modified, so Rael had a long hunt ahead of them before finding a cotton partner that not only met their standards with growing methods, but also supported the labor practices that co-founder Yanghee Paik says “respect the integrity of each farmer who carefully picks each bale.” The brand also partners with organizations like Happy Period, which provides period products to homeless women living in Los Angeles.
