REFINE BY
Here at Thrive Market, we’re taking a stand against factory-farming. Our two chicken offerings, organic and pasture-raised, begin with the belief that the chickens should be allowed to live in habitats that mimic their natural surroundings. They’re raised on small farms and permitted to roam outdoors at their leisure. This allows them to get plenty of exercise and display their natural behaviors, like pecking, flapping, bobbing, and clucking. The chickens never receive antibiotics and eat feed grown by farmers committed to improving soil quality over time. Sadly, this is not the case in the “big chicken” industry. Factory-farmed birds are cramped in small, inhumane conditions and rarely enjoy time outdoors. And many chicken farmers live contract to contract, without much security in their livelihood. For many of them, it’s extremely difficult to transition to a free-range chicken raising model even though it’s well worth it—both for the birds (better treatment) and for the farmers (fairer wages for their labors). Help support chicken farmers who have gone through the effort to raise their birds in humane conditions by buying Thrive Market organic or pasture-raised chicken.
Thrive Market Chicken Standards
We’re proud of our high poultry standards. Read on to learn more about our certified organic chicken and our pasture-raised chicken.
Certified organic: Our organic chicken cuts are 100% certified organic white and dark meat. No pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics are used.
Pasture-raised: Our pasture-raised chicken cuts come from heirloom and heritage birds that grow to be stronger and more flavorful than conventional chickens. As with our organic chicken, no pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics are used.
GAP animal welfare certified: Both our organic and pasture-raised chicken offerings are certified by the Global Animal Partnership, one of the largest animal welfare standards and labeling organizations in North America. GAP’s five-leveled set of animal welfare standards (with 5 being the highest rating) is specific to each species, which helps account for differences in the ideal living conditions and best care for different types of farm animals. Overall, the higher the tier, the more the farm mimics the animals’ natural environments.
Our organic chicken producers received a Step 3 rating because cooler East Coast temperatures require that the chickens are kept in an enclosure during the winter months.
Our pasture-raised chicken producers are Certified to GAP’s Pasture Raised (Step 4) animal welfare standards because the birds are given unrestricted access to the outdoors and habitat enhancements like perches that double as shelters.
Additionally, Thrive Market joined a nationwide movement to improve the lives of chickens because we value the compassionate treatment of farm animals as part of building a better food system. That is why we offer our members GAP certified frozen chicken, beef, and pork. GAP is an independent welfare certification recommended in the ASPCA® Shop With Your Heart program. We joined the nationwide movement to improve the lives of chickens by committing to reach the requirements laid out in the Better Chicken Commitment. As such, by 2024, we aim to require 100% of our Thrive Market branded chicken to be GAP-certified and processed using multi-step CAS processing, which is widely considered more humane.*
*This policy applies to Thrive Market branded frozen chicken items. This policy does not apply to packaged combination food products (such as soups, sandwiches, pizzas, burritos, and similar processed and prepared food products that are comprised of more than chicken meat with seasoning, curing agents, coloring, flavoring, preservatives, and/or similar meat additives).
