On this rural farm, the pigs root and forage throughout the year, eating mostly acorns, nuts, and grass. Sadly, most hogs are not raised this way. Most pork producers keep pigs confined to small, muddy pens. Along with unnatural grain-based diets, these animals are often fed antibiotics and hormones to help fatten them up. At Thrive Market, we’re pushing back against these practices by sourcing pasture-raised pork from ethically-raised pigs. White Oak Pastures also uses rotational grazing on its farm, which helps improve the health of the soil. This method means hogs cycle through different plots of land, helping to encourage regrowth and maximize the soil’s water absorption.
