Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that causes some areas of the skin to be darker than others, and may include black, gray, red, brown, or pink spots or patches throughout the body. According to the Cleveland Clinic, many things can lead to hyperpigmentation and dark spots at any age, including adrenal disorders, genetics (especially when your family is known for their freckles), hormone fluctuations, medications, vitamin deficiencies, sun damage, and thyroid disorders. A dermatologist can help evaluate any skin concerns you may have, and Thrive Market is ready to support your skin with gentle formulas that may help fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots over time.

Tips for Treating Hyperpigmentation

Since hyperpigmentation can be caused by a variety of factors (including environmental and genetic), Dermatologist Anita Sturnham often recommends a combination of at-home and in-clinic procedures to treat the condition. Of course, your particular severity will play a role in how you move forward, but there are a variety of options to choose from. Her first line of defense? Sun protection. "It goes without saying that protection from melanocyte-triggering UV damage is integral to the success of your treatment program," says Sturnham. "Look for a combination of mineral and chemical blocking agents such as titanium dioxide and ethyl salicylate to provide adequate broad-spectrum protection." You can also consider gentle exfoliants with ingredients like vitamin C or glycolic acid that may help increase the rate of skin cell renewal.
