Why You’ll Love It

These easy to use flakes are a seaweed gelatin substitute and are ideal for pie fillings, jellies, preserves, kanten, custards, and vegetable or fruit aspics. Wild, hand harvested sea vegetables with strong thickening properties are naturally prepared and dried in the mountains using only winter freezes and thaws. Agar agar bars and flakes are a vastly superior option to 'rendered' gelatin. They contain the benefits of sea vegetables and are easy to use. Called 'kanten' in Japan, these flakes are fat free, kosher and very low sodium.

About This Brand

Based in the southern part of Michigan, Eden Foods is an American food producer that specializes in traditional Japanese products, such as buckwheat soba noodles and umeboshi paste. A range of traditional pantry foods, like apple butter and sauerkraut, rounds out their product selection. How Eden Foods got started Nowadays, organic foods are everywhere, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, not long ago it was fairly difficult to obtain organic products. Seeing this gap in the market, a group of young entrepreneurs were inspired to come up with a way to provide healthy organic food, and created the Eden Foods Co-op in 1968. The co-op was an instant success, finding a large following, mainly of students at the University of Michigan in the college town of Ann Arbor. These bohemian scholars (who were weary of unrefined processed foods) would stop by the co-op to pick up organic vegetables and wholesome foods. Soon, Eden Foods became a community of like-minded individuals...

Reviews For Hand Harvested Agar Agar Flakes

Based on 6 Reviews

Love it!

This product makes some of the best jello around! You can add any flavor juice and fruit! Makes a healthy desert. I add a little vanilla yogurt to the top instead of whip cream. Try it, you'll like it!

Perfect for canning and gelatin

I use this agar agar all the time. Occasionally I make jello and replace the gelatin with this, but more often than not I'm canning. I can all fall long and this is the best quality and cheapest agar agar I could find.

- Norma_Sage

Great for home made cheese

I'm a vegan, so this is great when I'm making my own special cheese. It dissolves easily into a gel form and then hardens when I'm done cooking, making a wonderful cheese. I also like it as a substitute for corn starch

- Lula Thornton

Great for Canning

I grow my own strawberries for canning, and while a lot of people are okay with using chemical preservatives or sugar for preservation, I really want to avoid that. That's exactly where this agar agar comes in. I add it to my preserved jellies in order to get the right consistency and help the shelf-life of it. It doesn't have much of a taste to it, so I end up with a delicious jelly where the taste of the fruit shines through wonderfully. Great for canning.

Gelatin Replacement

This is a great gelatin replacement/substitute. I use it in refrigerated pies and other recipes and it is the perfect vegan option. It is a healthy option and doesn't add any noticeable flavor that is any different than "traditional" gelatin. It is easy to use and I will definitely be getting more in the near future.

It works!

I was looking for an alternative to corn starch and this works great! My daugther-in-law is vegan and uses this to make vegan cheeses, as well! I wish it came in a little bit larger package but otherwise no complaints.
