Banyan was founded in 1996 by Scott Cote and Kevin Casey in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before that, Cote was an Ayurveda student who was tasked with running the herbal pharmacy at the Ayurveda Institute. He worked there for 10 years mixing formulas and absorbing wisdom.

Cote and Casey saw a supply issue that needed to be addressed - Ayurveda was on the verge of taking off in the United States, and people were in search of high-quality herbs and products. They began formulating tablets and used the internet and catalogs to market to the public.
