Before we talk about cold brew and plant-based creamers, let’s start with Queen Califia. Her story is the stuff of California legend, and was written in a Spanish novel dating back to 1510. It’s believed that the mythical Queen led an army of women warriors who were oversaw a region of land that eventually became the Golden State. Califia Farms’ founder, Greg Steltenpohl, was so inspired by the legendary queen’s dedication to protecting and nourishing the environment, that he built his company around the idea of creating a new kind of army of wellness warriors. Many of our Thrive Market members have already stepped up to the plate, swapping in Califia’s products for conventional options. If you’d like to be one of them, here’s everything you need to know.

The History of Califia Farms

You already know where the inspiration came from, but there’s more to the Califia Farms story. It was Founder Greg Steltenpohl’s answer to an industry that has veered off-course. He has been quoted as saying, “You can criticize the food industry, or legislate it, or you can just create something different, something better.” Using real ingredients, reducing sugar, and focusing on sustainability is this brand’s contribution to a better food future. Califia Farms works closely with farmers to improve the environmental footprint of their operations—not only at its headquarters, but also in the field.

Califia Farms Company Mission

Califia Farms believes we can take better care of the planet by making plants the focus of our diet. Because plant-based foods don’t use as much water and land as raising animals like cattle, it’s one way to help make a bigger impact on the environment. Whether it’s recyclable packaging, direct-sourcing ingredients, or embracing renewable power, Califia is constantly looking for ways to make a difference in the food system.

Benefits of Califia Farms

It might not be top of mind when you’re adding creamer to your cup of coffee in the morning, but choosing Califia Farms products means you’re empowering a forward-thinking company that’s obsessed with plant-powered living. Sustainability has been one of the brand’s core values from the beginning, and Califia isn’t content to say it’s done all it can. Initiatives like recycling water, transitioning to renewable energy by 2020, installing solar equipment, and developing more direct trade relationships demonstrate just how passionate Califia Farms is about not only making the best plant-based beverages around, but also being an example for how to operate a food company that wants to leave a positive environmental legacy behind. Not to mention, Califia is a no-brainer for anyone going dairy-free, vegan, or leaning towards plant-based eating.
