The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reports 43 million women around the world use tampons for their monthly cycle but unfortunately, “tampons may contain traces of dioxin from bleach, pesticide residues from conventional, non-organic cotton, and mystery “fragrance” ingredients.” To steer clear of toxic materials and opt for chemical-free feminine care, you’re in the right place. Today, there are more and more brands taking steps to protect women’s bodies by offering healthier pads, tampons, and liners made with better-for-you materials like organic cotton and medical-grade TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomers).

The History of Oi

Before Oi began, it started with one lofty goal: to remove plastics from hygiene products. It started with tampons, and has now branched out into pads and pantyliners, too. Based in New Zealand, the brand offers hypoallergenic, biodegradable products that aren’t just plastic-free, but affordable. Founder Helen Robinson has said she gets goosebumps when Oi customers report having their monthly period improved “through comfort, less cramping, no irritations, no sweats or nausea, and flow reduction—not to mention that they have a clear conscience by being able to make a better choice for their bodies and the world around them.” As one of the fastest growing feminine hygiene companies in New Zealand, Oi was named “one to watch” by Deloitte Fast 50 two years running, and entered the U.S. market in 2018.

Oi Company Mission

Oi stands for “Organic initiative.” This brand is women-led, and its focus is on creating female products that are both safe for women, and safe for the planet. By saying “yes” to natural organic materials and “no” to toxins, synthetics, and chemicals, Oi is paving the way for women everywhere to experience their cycles without the threat of harming their bodies with harmful chemicals month after month.

Benefits of Oi

Oi’s products are made without chlorine, pesticides, perfume, and synthetic plastics. Essentially, they’re as natural as can be, making it easier to stay clean during your cycle. The cotton Oi uses for its pads, tampons, and liners are Certified Organic and grown using the strict standards set by three independent certification bodies: Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), BioGro, and the FDA. GOTS, for example, not only focuses on the materials themselves, but states that child and indentured labor is never allowed, and safe working conditions and living wages are mandatory. Thrive Market members have embraced Oi as a go-to brand ever since we made it available on our site. Angela says the pads are her favorite. “They absorb well and are thin. I've tried quite a few of the organic cotton pads and these are the best.” And of the menstrual cup, Rebecca reports that after getting used to using it, it’s “comfortable and convenient.”
