Just when many of us were feeling pretty good about making the switch from disposable water bottles to the reusable variety, we’ve learned there might be more to consider when it comes to choosing our drinking vessels wisely. The reason? BPA (or bisphenol A) exposure. Found in a variety of plastic and canned goods (so many, in fact, that it’s pretty tough to avoid altogether), this chemical compound may pose health risks when exposure is high. Thankfully, more and more brands are taking a mindful approach to reusable containers and disposable packaging by going BPA-free. Here’s what you need to know about BPA and how to avoid it as much as possible.

What Is BPA?

BPA is short for bisphenol A, an organic synthetic compound that’s added to many commercial items, including food containers, toiletries, and feminine hygiene products. It was first discovered in the 1890s and is so prevalent because it goes into epoxy resins that are used to line many plastic-derived products and canned food containers.

Is BPA Harmful?

Often times, products with packaging containing BPA don’t fully seal the compound into the container. This allows the chemical to mix with the contents of the container—and be ingested. The chemical has come under scrutiny because it’s said to mimic the structure and function of estrogen (aka act as an endocrine disruptor). As a result, some studies suggest BPA can potentially impair cell repair, reproduction, and fetal development; affect thyroid function; and decrease energy levels. In 2014, the FDA reported a safe daily level of BPA exposure (23 micrograms per pound of body weight). Because this is tough for the average person to measure, many people still try to avoid the chemical as much as possible.

Tips for Avoiding BPA

BPA can lurk in a variety of places, making it tough to avoid. But a little smart shopping can go a long way to keeping your exposure to a minimum. Here are some key tips:

  • Read labels carefully. BPA is often used in the lining for canned food items and beverages, including beer and soda. Try to find items that are labeled as “BPA-Free” or packaged in glass containers.
  • Know your numbers. Plastic items labeled with the recycling numbers 3 and 7 or the letters “PC” likely contain BPA.
  • Find BPA-free plastic bottles. Reusable plastic water bottles may seem like a healthy, earth-friendly choice, but many non-flexible plastics contain BPA. Be sure to shop for BPA-free bottles.
  • Say no to receipts. Skip the receipt or ask for a paperless, emailed one when possible. Interestingly, most carbonless paper receipts contain BPA that can easily get inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
