Why You’ll Love Organic Marinara Tomato Sauce
If you’re going to make a pasta sauce, why go anywhere else in the world besides Italy? That was the thinking Thrive Market had in developing a line of jarred organic tomato sauces. Rather than use a bland blend of paste and fillers, this hearty marinara uses whole, ripe plum tomatoes plucked by hand from vines in San Marzano, Italy for a truly authentic taste.
Organic San Marzano tomatoes are considered to be among the best in the world. They are sustainably grown in rich volcanic soil near Mount Vesuvius, which provides a sweet flavor and low acidity. They are also highly coveted for their bright red color, easily removable skin, delightful taste, and low seed count. Even the Washington Post named them “the Bible of tomatoes.”
In addition to premium fresh peeled tomatoes, Thrive Market Organic Marinara Sauce also features a handful of certified organic ingredients including onions, garlic, sea salt, black pepper, and basil—each is sautéed in extra virgin olive oil and then slow-kennel cooked. The non-GMO sauce contains no extra additives, preservatives, hydrogenated oils, or sweeteners. It’s also free of trans fats and low-calorie for a wholesome flavor boost for pasta, grilled fish, roasted vegetables, and more favorite dishes. Buon appetito!
A brief history of marinara sauce
The origins of marinara sauce remain a bit of a mystery. Though it is known for certain that it was born in the 17th century in coastal regions of southern Italy (possibly Naples or even Sicily), no one knows the exact location. The name is an offshoot of the Italian words “marinai” (meaning sailors) and “marinaro” (translating to seafaring), leading to speculation that the sauce was first popularized by chefs in waterside villages where ingredients were cheap, traveled well, and didn’t spoil as easily as other perishables. After all, these were the days before refrigeration.
Another prominent theory is that pasta and sauce became a quick dish that wives could make for their sailor and fishermen husbands. The story goes that when the women saw ships on the horizon, they rushed to the kitchen to prepare a hot meal that would be waiting on the table.
Marinara sauce made its way to America in the 1900s when Italians emigrated to the country and brought their beloved cuisine with them. The rest is history.
What is the difference between marinara sauce and spaghetti sauce?
Nowadays, both marinara sauce and spaghetti sauce are used interchangeably to describe a topping pasta. The main difference is that marinara sauce is more minimalist while spaghetti sauce is slightly more complex.
Marinara is a quick simple sauce based on traditional Italian recipes and usually just contains the core ingredients of tomatoes, onions, olive oil, garlic, salt, black pepper, and basil.
Spaghetti sauce, on the other hand, adds extra ingredients such as sausage, olives, or mushrooms or whatever else the chef may desire.
Health benefits of marinara sauce
Marinara sauce may not be a trendy superfood like bone broth, but it is still full of good-for-you nutrients.
- Vitamin C: Tomatoes are naturally rich in this immune-boosting vitamin. Cooking the fruit enhances the antioxidant power even further, making marinara sauce an excellent choice for staving off contagious illnesses and preventing early signs of aging.
- Lycopene: This powerful antioxidant actually gives tomatoes their red hue, and as you might notice by the brighter batches, that there is a much higher amount in organic varieties. Lycopene is responsible for maintaining the strength of cell membranes, which in turn allows good nutrients into the body and keeps bad toxins out. As such, it’s a wonderful way to help prevent many common medical issues such as heart disease, infertility, diabetes, cataracts, and osteoporosis. Tomatoes are the primary source of lycopene, so eat up!
- Kaempferol: Kaempferol is an important flavonoid that is found to have 97% higher concentrations in organic tomatoes. It offers anti-inflammatory benefits and can help prevent cancer and aid in lung-related issues.
- Other vitamins and minerals: Although Vitamin C is the most prominent vitamin found in tomato sauce, the fruit also has sufficient amount of vitamins A and K. Vitamin A improves vision (especially in low light situations) while K prevents blood clotting.
Thrive Market Organic Marinara Tomato Sauce also has good stores of calcium for maintaining strong bones as well as iron, which ensures the delivery of blood to cells throughout the body.
Unique marinara sauce recipes
Of course you can always make a simple and delicious meal by placing hot marinara sauce atop freshly cooked pasta noodles—pick out a wheatless favorite and then try our seven tips for making the most tasty pasta ever. But, the Italian delicacy can also inspire some unexpected dishes including fish and vegetables.
Though it might seem fishy putting marinara sauce on a filet of cod, the results speak for themselves. Tomato and basil season the fish to perfection and give it a tender texture that makes it mouthwatering to eat. Plus, this slow-cooker recipe only takes 15 minutes of your time to create a perfect dish. All you need is a jar of Thrive Market sauce, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, honey, soy sauce, thyme, and an onion.
For all the vegetarians out there, try braising cauliflower in marinara sauce for a meaty texture and incredible Mediterranean flavor. In a large pot, add the sauce, chili powder, paprika, onion powder, anchovies, kalamata olives, red wine vinegar, and olive oil, and let it simmer with a full head of the vegetable for a truly tasty dish.

Tastes like homemade
This is the most amazing sauce I have ever had! I have never had a jar sauce that has tasted so close to homemade, and with such an amazing price...and organic! Truly a great product.
Love the ingredients. Absolutely delicious.
My New Favorite Pasta Sauce
This marinara sauce is wonderful. I use it for spaghetti, lasagna, etc. The only thing that comes close is San Marzano tomato sauce and it is far more expensive. Highly recommended!
Love this stuff. Possibly the best bottled sauce we have ever had.
Lurve it! So Yummy!
Really delicious pasta sauce! A good value and great ingredients! Plan on stocking my pantry with this always! :)
- James & Patricia
Taste is exceptional
This is the most delicious marinara sauce I have every purchased in a jar. The taste is exceptional and I can use it in many dishes calling for marinara or spaghetti sauces. The sauce is chunky not smooth so be aware if you like smooth sauces. Salt content is low so it is a good heart healthy choice.
This is a very good product. I buy it regularly.
Made with olive oil and no added sugar, this is a convenient pantry staple.
Thrive marinara sauce
This product is absolutely delicious! I just used my last & must order more!! Thank you!! 5*

Tasty stuff! Great to have on hand
Good flavor that can be adapted to lots of uses. Not too sweet (pet peeve) or nasty and sour. We will have a jar or two on hand always.
Fresh and delicious!
I usually buy Rao's sauces for their homemade consistency and freshness - I was amazed to find that Thrive's sauce was so similar! This will be a pantry staple from now on, and it comes at a great price for such good quality. Yay!
Loved this with the spaghetti noodles I also bought at Thrive!
The entire family loves this sauce...and no sugar added!!thanks
Great jarred sauce
This is a go to when I don't feel like making my own. I have nothing bad to say.
The sauce is all right, but I've had better -- one from Whole Foods that's only $2.99, also organic. This sauce is a little more acidic than I like my tomato sauces to be.
Great Pasta Sauce
Loved the flavor of this marinara sauce! Happy with what they chose to put in it and especially pleased with what they chose to leave out that most jarred pasta sauces contain. Will definitely buy again!
I will be ordering a lot of this sauce as it has a terrific fresh flavor. The only thing I would like to see is that it would be a little thicker.
It is pretty good.
Can't rave about this enough! Great for my almond-fried chicken marinara. Yum yum!
- Tammy Pigott
This tastes exactly like my favorite home made recipe that I got from Manny, a dear Italian friend and a great cook. It is light and fresh, my favorite.
I thought I made the best...
This is better than mine and that's sayin' sumthin'. I added beef to one batch, Italian sausage to another. I can't believe anyone could make a sauce better than Mine, but here it is.
Thrive brand organic tomato sauces are the best I've found. They are light and incredibly flavorful. They do not have that thick, acidy, tomato paste flavor or texture. They are perfect, no need to add anything to them.
Thrive brand organic tomato sauces are the best I've found. They are light and incredibly favorable. The do not have that thick, acidy, tomato paste flavor or texture. They are perfect and next to their spicy pepper variety Marinara is my favorite.
i really like the test. Use it for everything I can. Will order again.
This sauce is excellent and tastes just like I made it. It is full of flavor and a great price for a large jar.
Tastes like chicken soup
This sauce was a free gift with a large order. We had it one night on pasta and no one liked it. It had a distinct "meaty" smell and taste that reminded us of chicken noodle soup. It was gross and it had no tomatoey tartness at all. I looked at the ingredients to double check no meat. I'm baffled. I can many gallons of my own sauce every summer and cannot figure out why this sauce was so weird. If this wasn't a free gift, I would have complained to Thrive customer service.
I was buying Rao's but this is my new favorite.
I love all the Thrive Market Organic tomato sauces. Taste fresh and homemade!
Best sauce ever
I love this Organic Marinara sauce. Sometime I add a teaspoon of sugar to it but I would prefer to add it than have it in the ingredients. The most lovely taste!
Loved this light, yet flavorful sauce!
It was gone in one meal for my 3 kids, they liked that it wasn't super thick or heavily spiced.
Too much salt
Tastes good but they should have found a way to cut down on sodium content which is much too high. I will not repurchase for this reason.
Close to homemade!
I have had a difficult time finding an organic tomato sauce that tastes great and is a reasonable price. When I don't make my sauce from scratch this is a winner!
I really liked this sauce. It did have a couple really large chunks of tomatoes which I don't like (so I put them in my husband's bowl- LOL!)
Maybe with too much garlic for my taste but I don't like garlic though.
My family loves this sauce!
Tastes exactly like homemade. Very refreshing to have wholesome pasta sauce on hand that doesn't include citric acid.
This sauce is very delicious and can always be found in our cupboard.
I must say i normally make my own sauce but this one taste just as good. It taste fresh. You can really taste the tomatoes in this sauce.
Tastes homemade--organic, open jar and pour it out!
My whole family loves this sauce.
I love that the ingredients are organic and free of GMOs. Also, I appreciate there is no added sugar or high fructose corn syrup and like that olive oil is used - not canola. Besides the ingredients, it is simply delicious.
Delicious! I was going to start making my own sauce but then I discovered Thrive's sauce. It's organic, made with whole ingredients, and tastes homemade.
Wonderful on pasta!
This is so good I think I will be buying this instead of making my own!
Organic Marinara Tomato Sauce
This sauce is really good. It tastes as good as the store bought brands and doesn't have all the preservatives and chemicals in it. I would buy more of this items.

This is my favorite of all marinara sauces I have ever tried. It is so yummy and it tastes and feels like it is homemade. It is definitely going to be an essential in my kitchen.

Great Basic Sauce
I added some fresh garlic and herbs and it was perfect!
I'm picky about spaghetti sauces, this is my favorite!
- Kathy Manning
Good basic sauce at great price
I add some herbs from my garden and veggies or meatballs; good authentic flavor and texture. Great price compared to my local health food chain.
Seriously, so delicious! I've used this sauce on pasta, and also as sauce on pizza and it's been simply delicious every time. Hearty, savory, and high quality - I definitely recommend it!
Amazing All-Natural Spaghetti Sauce!
I've never found a better, more flavorful, healthier marinara sauce than this one from Thrive Market. I've truly found a new favorite!
- Tara Quint
Delicious! Sugar free and lower in sodium than most; I usually make my own but this is great when I want a quick meal.
A must try. Delicious sauce.
Great fresh taste.
I liked that it wasn't sweet like a lot of other store bought sauces, but I had to add A LOT of spices. Was too bland for me.
Rich flavor and didn't have to add too many spices. (I had to add extra garlic powder bc I'm obsessed.) Sauté up a little mushroom and ground meat and pour this over. Let it simmer and serve it on top of spaghetti squash! Excellent.
What a great flavor...natural and quick to add to my pasta dish. I was really surprised! It is now a PANTRY STAPLE! Can't go wrong with this sauce.
- Mama B
Love that is so fresh, organic and it tastes amazing! A must!
This marinara sauce is great. Tastes like sauce from a top Italian restaurant.
finding a pasta sauce that tastes great is a hard task. i just recently found Dave's gourmet with heirloom tomatoes and it was amazing- though it is like 8 bucks at whole foods. this is amazing too! my 5 year old son said it was the best pasta he'd eaten! it is so fresh tasting . i eat a lot of pasta and have tried just about every sauce and this is at the top of my list! i think i may finish off the jar today actually :)
Delicious and versatile sauce!
I bought this marinara sauce with the intention of using it over pasta. wound up making a veggie bowl (quinoa, beans and veggies) and pouring the sauce on top--it was perfect! Very clean flavors in this one.
Such a treat!
I kept hearing people rave about this sauce so I finally decided to try it for myself. I made baked turkey meatballs Paleo style and was amazed. It's sweet and light yet totally fulfilling. I savored the sauce so much, I didn't miss the noodles at all! And all organic ingredients at a fraction of the price from any marinara I would normally buy --I may never use anything else again!
Look no further
I love this product, and it was the star feature in my Shrimp Arrabbiata with a little doctoring up of course. I love how light the sauce was and could really taste the fresh ingredients. Like another reviewer said you can really sip this baby up straight out of the jar. YUMMM!
- C Robinson
This sauce tastes more like homemade than any jar sauce I have ever had. I love its fresh, robust flavor and will definitely purchase it again!
Great marinara sauce! This will be part of my pantry now.
This was delicious! I made a veggie stir-fry and dumped the tomato sauce in, and couldn't believe how flavorful it was. I checked the ingredients and there was no sugar (or sugar-like ingredients)! Plus the price is unbelievable for organic tomatoes. Definitely going to try all the flavors of Thrive sauce!
Although I had quite a bit of sauce left-over this was delicious. My usual average-tasting linguine actually tasted on the side of gourmet- Mamma Mia!
This sauce is absolutely delicious. Like stick a spoon in the jar and sip it delicious. My boyfriend and I can't get enough of it - toss in some veggies and pasta and it's a yummy and easy dinner!
