History of tahini

Tahini is also known as sesame butter and is the product of ground sesame seeds that has been used in Lebanese, Armenian, Greek, Cypriot, Indian, Iranian, Israeli, Palestinian, Turkish, Iraqi, Levantine, North African, and Bulgarian cuisines for thousands of years. Tahini was first mentioned as an ingredient of hummus, in a recipe from a 13th-century Arab cookbook. It wasn’t until 1940 that it finally became available in the United States along with other raw nut butters.

Health benefits

Sesame seeds boast some serious health benefits, but it’s difficult to eat enough of them to make a difference, especially since we often use the seeds as little more than a seasoning or garnish. But crushed into a paste, we can consume it in larger amounts as a spread or dip.

Tahini Egg Salad

If you’re looking for a fresh spin on a classic recipe, Tahini Egg Salad might just be right up your alley. This dish combines avocados, roma tomatoes, radishes, lemon juice, feta cheese, eggs, and of course tahini. Just hard-boil the eggs, dice the rest of the ingredients, and combine them all, topping with the lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, and feta cheese.

Tahini Date Cookies

honey, vanilla extract, medjool dates, rolled oats, and walnuts. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more nutritious (or delicious) recipe anywhere.

Just mix together the tahini, honey, vanilla, and dates. In another bowl, throw together the oats, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, and walnuts. Fold the contents of both bowls together, and you have Tahini Date Cookie dough ready to be dropped onto a baking sheet by the spoonful. Only 10 minutes in the oven, and you will have a healthy treat that tastes oh-so good.
