We always love the thrill of discovering a new ingredient to try, which is why lupini beans are right up our alley. Hailing from the lupin family of legumes (distant relatives of the peanut), lupini beans were a popular addition to the Mediterranean diet in ancient times, and are traditionally served alongside olives as an appetizer or snack, delivering plant protein while you nosh. In modern times, Italian grandmothers often prepare lupini beans before Christmas, allowing them to soak for up to two weeks to remove the natural bitterness. Thanks to the long preparation time, this legume hasn’t won any popularity contests, but that’s where BRAMi comes in. This snack brand does all the work for you, so it’s easy to enjoy all the benefits without having to babysit beans on the stove all day.

The History of BRAMi

Inspired by the Mediterranean and reimagined in a Brooklyn kitchen, BRAMi makes sprouted and marinated lupini beans for all your snacking needs. Founder Aaron Gatti was originally introduced to the bean as a kid, when he visited his father’s family in Italy. In 2013, Gatti introduced lupini beans to his wife—a vegetarian—and she loved the plant-based protein element. Named after the Italian verb bramare, which means “to yearn for “ or “to passionately desire,” BRAMi felt like the right moniker to convey just how addicting these beans can be.

BRAMi Company Mission

BRAMi makes a fresher alternative to dry snacks by packaging up Italian lupini beans. Since they’re a nutritious snack you can enjoy before or during a meal, or as a snack, the brand likes to call itself “Italy’s answer to Japanese edamame.” In addition to creating unique flavor spins on this traditional legume, BRAMI continues to educate consumers about the history and nutritional benefits of these lesser-known beans.

Benefits of BRAMi

BRAMi lupini beans are marinated and packed fresh, so it’s not a dry processed snack, but as fresh as you can get while still offering a longer shelf life. They’re sprouted for 10 days, which helps remove any naturally occurring antinutrients, and have zero net carbs. Lupini beans are also a more sustainable plant to grow, requiring less water, naturally repelling pests, and helping replenish nitrogen and phosphate to the soil.

Lupini beans are known for delivering plant protein and other nutrients. Here’s what’s inside a bag of BRAMi Italian Lupini Beans in the Sea Salt flavor:

7g protein
7g dietary fiber
3% recommended daily value calcium

There’s also no sugar, no trans fat, and no saturated fat, and one serving (25 beans) is only 60 calories. Lupuini beans also work for a variety of diets, like vegetarian, vegan, keto, and paleo.
