Why You’ll Love Fish Sauce

Move over salt, and make way soy sauce—Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce is the new condiment in town. Providing a bit of saltiness and delightful umami flavor, it’s traditionally used in Asian cuisine, though it can also enhance a number of savory recipes, including pastas, Caesar salad, and braised dishes. A dash in marinades, dipping sauces, and dressings also adds unmistakable depth and richness without any of the bad stuff—each 8.45 oz. bottle of sauce is free of cholesterol, trans fat, carbs, and sugar.

How this fish sauce is made

Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce comes from Vietnam using a 200-year-old artisanal method that salts black anchovies fresh from the waters surrounding the Phu Quoc island and then ages them in wooden barrels for a year. There are no additional ingredients or chemicals used in the fermentation process, which provides a 100 percent all-natural sauce free of MSG and loaded with tons of flavor and protein.

The health benefits of fish sauce

A good quality fish sauce is determined by its protein content, and Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce has one of the highest naturally occurring levels of protein available in a condiment (four grams are in every tablespoon serving). Not only that, but this sauce is packed with B vitamins and minerals like magnesium.

Protein

Not only does protein provide a satisfied, full feeling after eating, but it gives your body the building blocks that help to grow and repair cells. Protein exists in the muscles, heart, skin, eyes, and hair, all of which will all be able to grow and heal themselves much more efficiently with a diet that’s high in protein.

B vitamins

This family of vitamins is especially known for a number of energizing properties. All of them help convert carbs into immediate energy, so adding Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce to your meals can provide a nice boost. Additionally, B vitamins are important for red blood cell formation, which helps to deliver oxygen to every part of the body. Without sufficient stores of this nutrient, you might end up feeling sluggish and worn down, which is where foods like fish sauce come to the rescue.

Magnesium

This mineral is present in literally every cell of the human body, and is also a vital component for promoting energy levels. Magnesium aids in converting food into energy for the body’s cells, and it has powerful anti-inflammatory effects that can help with both minor aches and pains and also the symptoms of prolonged, chronic inflammation.

Cooking with Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce

Fish sauce doesn’t just have to be reserved for fish. You can also use it in any way you might use soy sauce, as it will add a salty umami tang to whatever food it touches. However, use in moderation since fish sauce has quite a bit of sodium and is incredibly potent in flavor (most recipes only call for a teaspoon). Here are some of Thrive Market’s favorite ways to season.

Sweet and Sour Sea Bass

Skip the take-out for dinner tonight. Instead, make your own Thai-inspired sweet and sour bass. The fresh lime juice, coconut sugar, and Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce combine to infuse the tender fish with perfectly sweet and exotic flavor. Before cooking, season the fillet with zesty red pepper flakes, sea salt, and coconut oil; and after heating up in a skillet, add some cilantro and snow peas on top to complete the meal. The result will be a rich dish that will literally melt in your mouth. Even better, it only takes 20 minutes to make.

Thai Red Curry Salmon Bowl with Kelp Noodles

Curry lovers will go crazy for this dish that adds even more spice to life. The broth is made with a mix of red curry paste, coconut oil, coconut sugar, ginger, tomato paste, paprika, coriander, garlic, creamy coconut milk, and of course Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce. Instead of rice, though, kelp noodles provide some extra texture without the carbs. The salmon and broccolini simmer together in the pot, making them tender and soaking up the sauce’s unique, notable flavors.

Shrimp Vietnamese Noodle Bowl

For a light dish, look no further than this enticing Vietnamese noodle bowl recipe. This classic hot-cold dish subs in fresh, crunchy cucumber noodles instead of rice noodles, making it veggie-centric and adding in irresistible texture. Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce gives it some extra depth and more flavor, while the quick pickled vegetables are a tangy complement to the sauted shrimp that’s marinated in coconut aminos, honey, and sesame oil.

Poached Cod

Fish doesn’t always have to be baked or grilled; for a new approach, try poaching flaky cod fillets in a bath of tomato sauce (choose mild marinara or even a spicy pepper-infused jar). Add in balsamic vinegar, honey, soy sauce, thyme, onion, and Red Boat Premium Fish Sauce to amp up the flavor even more. It all comes together in just 20 minutes and is nearly foolproof to suit any level of home cook.

Excellent fish sauce, well made and tastes great.

- Harry

Incredible product

If you want your food to have a special flavor, you'll love this. Make sure you cut back on added salt though because this is plenty salty on its own. Love it in stir fry and meatballs!

- Katie

Great for all paleo recipes

I have used this in many of my paleo recipes and it is great.

- Lorraine

Fish Sauce

It is the best fish sauce I have had since my time in Vietnam.

- William

Makes the best chinese food and adds excellent flavor to so many recipes like meatloaf and meatballs and burgers!

- Jaclyn

Love it!

This fish sauce is as good or better than any that I have ever used before I went paleo. Tons of flavor!

- Sarah

Paleo Perfect

I use my RB fish sauce all the time. It's delicious and I love the short ingredient list.

- Anna

Great!

Excellent product and a great value on this site. It's hard to find fish sauce without MSG and a ton of artificial junk. This is CLEAN and the only fish sauce I use to make Thai Curry. Much spendier at my local stores and competing sites.

- Laura

a strange and wonderful condiment

my husband loves this on any number of things - rice dishes, salads, veggies...it is an acquired taste but if you like Vietnamese food you are likely to have tried it. red boat is unique in that it has no added sugar. rare!

- chris

"The Best Fish Sauce Ever."

I enjoy Thai cooking & the Red Boat fish sauce doesn't have any sugar, which is important to me. It also adds a very good flavor to the Thai dishes I prepare.

- Frances

best fish sauce

Glad to find this brand as it is the best!

- Pamela

Finally, a solution to fish sauce!

My wife loves fish sauce, like a lot. Sadly, most of it is full of stuff other than fish and salt and since we follow a modified Paleo diet, she can't have it. Thankfully through Thrive we came across Red Boat, which is Paleo friendly! I ordered a few bottles and am glad I did as she loves it!!! Although I may sprout gills if she puts it into anymore of my meals...

- Brady

fish sauce

Not as fishy as I was expecting, so quite pleased. Use only 2 tsp at time when making sauces.

- joy

Lacking in fish taste.

Definitely a healthier option than the store bought brands. The taste was good but it lacked a lot of the fish taste most authentic fish sauces carry.

I usually pour some over my rice or in my Asian soups. This definitely carries a saltier taste, which I didn't mind but was also very noticeable.

- Lucia T.

Clean, tasty fish sauce

This fish sauce is hands down the best bang for your buck. It's got some body the consistency it and isn't all watered down. In fact, it doesn't even have water listed as an ingredient. It's just anchovy and sea salt, nice and simple and clean. It lends a rich, robust umami flavor to anything you put it on, and I love that it's not saturated with salt like other fish sauces. I like it best in my stir fry, but sometimes it's good to mix in a little when I steam my rice. The fish taste is super fresh, in a good way, and I can definitely taste the slight nuttiness that others mentioned. I'd never even heard about this sauce until I saw it on Thrive Market, and ounce for ounce, not only is it cheaper here than other sauces, it's way better tasting. Definitely can't go back to the old stuff I was using.

Best Fish Sauce Around

I love Red Boat fish sauce is amazing but, there are some things I can't cook with it. The reason why is because the flavor is very very rich. It gives a great depth of flavor to dishes. This sauce is in my buy again category.

I would really like to see a few different levels of flavor. Maybe one that is more mellow vs deep and rich. Great for only fish though- wish I could use it on other things.

- Francis Roy

The Real Deal

My wife is Vietnamese and she never seems to be satisfied with a store bought fish sauce. I saw this at a Vietnamese grocery store and nervously decided to give it a shot. My wife said it was the best tasting fish sauce she has ever had. We also love this brand because not only is it family-owned but this product contains no MSG and is gluten-free. If you're looking for a high-quality fish sauce, here's your winner!

- Roderick Watkins

Everything.

I read NomNomPaleo which convinced me to try this. She said she puts it in everything. And it turns out you really can. I prefer that the fish smell be cooked off (takes a while to saute- maybe 10 minutes) so I always consider that factor before adding to any dish. But basically, if the dish needs salt, you can usually sub this wonder sauce. I've put it in scrambled eggs, quiches, any sauteed veggie dish, roasted veggies, etc.

- Heather

Best Fish Sauce Ever. And I've tried a lot!

Red Boat Fish Sauce is super delicious and while it does have a fishy smell, it smells way better than some of the other fish sauces that I have had in the past. I love the amber color it has and how the sauce is almost viscous, which hints at the fact this liquid is fermented fish and salt, nothing else.

A little bit goes a long way and I don't mind adding this to every savory dish I make to give it some umami-goodness, even if it doesn't call for fish sauce. I love this when making Nom Nom Paleo's Thai Omelet, which just takes eggs to the next level.

The only things I would change here is that the spout on the bottle would flow a bit faster and the cap had a little tab to make opening it a little bit easier. And that Thrive Market would carry a larger bottle. I always end up buying two, when I would prefer one large one!

- Kimberly

Good

Good to mix with coconut aminos to make a soy sauce substitute. Great for stir-fries and other Asian-type dishes.

- Erin

Fishy-wishy

I have not used this yet, but I did open it to taste it. You can too, but you may not like it straight on the tongue. It tastes fishy. I probably won't do that again. I bought this because Michelle Tam of Nom-Nom Paleo uses it in her cookbook, so I had to have it too! Even though I've not actually used it yet in a recipe, I wanted to leave a review, on the chance that I forget to do it later. ;)

- DIANA S

I hate fish sauce, but not this

I didn't grow up around the ocean, so fishy has slowly been an acquired taste for me and I'm still working on it. I lived in SouthEast Asia and East Asia for several years and fish still hasn't grown on me much. But aside from the expected smell, this is so good. I love Asian cooking so I wasn't willing to skimp, but hate most fish sauces because they taste awful to me. Also, I hate that most have added ingredients. I can tell that this is pure. Other reviewers said that they have had better, but didn't offer any insight! If there is better out there then I would love to try it.

- Beka

Great Price!

I have used this fish sauce for a long time. I was excited to see that I could get it here on Thrive market for 35% off the regular price, or around $4 a bottle. I have saved a ton of money since joining Thrive and it makes eating healthy extremely easy. Now if only they would come cook for me!
I really like the flavor of this fish sauce . It goes great with salads and fish dishes. I also like it with chicken and in a couple of my home made dips. It has a flavor that perfectly accents fishy foods.

- Samantha W.

Paleo Friendly

This sauce is tasty and a great paleo friendly option. It is great on salads with tuna and also with chicken, even though it's not a fish. I like it in some of my sauces too-it adds a great unique flavor that I know and love. A great Fish sauce!

- S. Jade

Subtle and delitious

This fish sauce is fantastic! It is subtle in dishes and never overpowering or over seasoned. I use it in a lot of dishes, it's hard to pick just one to mention. It is also great drizzled in soup. A little goes a long way so it costs more up front, but it lasts a long time !

- Stefen U.

Picky Eater

I am a very picky person when it comes to my fish sauce. This isn't my top choice, but it is still much better than the competition. I like it on my fish and over salads. It is good, though it isn't as good as those served in restaurants.

- Sara I.

Perfect Caesar Salad

If you are looking to make the perfect Caesar salad, this is just the ingredient you are looking for. It adds a fresh new taste to salad that everyone is bound to love! Just add a little cheese, egg, and tomato and it's ready to be savored bite by bite. I love it!

- Stephanie Quake

Worth it - delicious and Whole30/paleo compliant!

I love this sauce! I also love that it is all natural - the ingredients are compliant for Whole30, paleo, and the autoimmune paleo protocol. It is delicious.

It can seem like a lot of money for a small container, but a little goes a long way. You only need add a smidge to whatever you're making to achieve the savory/umami flavor. I use it in almost everything - homemade hot sauce, shrimp dishes, and more. It can be really hard to find locally (and if you do, it's expensive) so I am so excited to find it on Thrive!!

- Rob Carlson

Decent fish sauce

My husband and I are big fans of Asian food. We especially like Vietnamese food. Red Boat fish sauce is good, but isn't as authentic as we've had in those restaurants.

I think the sauce is slightly too acidic, and doesn't enhance fish flavor as much as I want. It's not bad, and better than most on the market, but I have a very high standard.

- Hildy Alan

Subtle and wonderful

An excellent fish sauce. Not overpowering, not salty or too sweet. It has a perfect balance that makes fish sauce a great product.

I use it differently than most. Of course, it's good for fish dishes, but it's great in chicken soup and drizzled over hot bread, try it and you'll see what I mean.

- Hogan Adams

I'll never buy another fish sauce!

This stuff is absolutely delicious. It is completely pure - no additives, MSG, corn syrup, etc. No preservatives, so you know it's fresh. Only two ingredients: black anchovies and sea salt.

Red Boat is particularly good because of how high its natural protein content is. In combination with the vitamins and minerals, this makes for a delicious, nutritious sauce that provides that amazing umami flavor. I recommend trying it on just about anything - seafood, salad, pasta, you name it. It transforms any dish and is well worth the price.

- Roberto

Thrive price make it even better

I use Red Boat fish sauce for a lot of things. It's great if I'm rustling up a dip for appetizers. But it also works well added to fish stews and as a marinade for fresh fish.

Thrive makes it easy to buy this sauce, as it's priced under seven dollars here, whereas Amazon sells it for $8.50 per bottle. Another reason Thrive membership is worth the price!

- H. Astor

Love the anchovy taste

Red Boat fish sauce has this great unique taste because of the fresh anchovies they use. It's not very fishy, but it's got a nice kick, and you can taste it in every bite.

I like to pour this sauce on my fried fish, but it's divine when you pair it with shrimp. This sauce is as organic as you get. Only sea salt and anchovies, that's it.

- Helena

Brings fish dishes to life

Red Boat is an authentic fish sauce from Vietnam. It's a natural product made with only two ingredients, and it has very little sugar.

It has a deep full flavor that enhances the taste of fish, especially baked salmon and mackerel, my two favorites. It also works as a dip for egg rolls and wrapped chicken.

- Herbert Alexander

Simply fish sauce

Two simple ingredients make up this salty goodness. However, I am not a fan of the price, but appreciate the discount I get purchasing from Thrive Market.

I think it's great that this fish sauce is made by a family owned business. It always feels good supporting small businesses!

- C. Lupercio

Great sauce

This isn't the only fish sauce I buy, but I love the quality flavor of Red Boat fish sauce. It's well worth the price, although I only buy it when I can find it on sale.

I read somewhere that takes something like 5 pounds of fresh anchovies to make just one bottle of Red Boat fish sauce. That has to be why it tastes so good.

You'll definitely notice the difference when you try it.

- Rayland N.

Tasty

I bought this because I liked the look of the cute bottle, and I am always look to try new, healthy foods. It arrive in perfect condition, thank you Thrive Market. I have tried numerous fish sauces and until I tasted this stuff I never really knew what fish sauce ought to taste like. It has that one-of-a-kin umami flavor.

If you haven't tried this stuff yet, don't wait any longer.

- Ches C

Good Taste, Lots of Salt

I really want to like this more, but the sodium in this is absolutely insane. It makes a pretty good fish sauce actually, but I have to be very, very careful about how much of it I use because of the sodium content. There's also a general "fish-like" smell to it, but I'm so used to it that it doesn't bother me. (My husband pointed it out to me the other day). I'll keep using it, but I really wish it didn't have to feel like such a delicate balance when I'm using it.

- Vivienne B

Better than squid

This fish sauce is good, and it is much tastier than Squid brand. However, it isn't the best thing I've ever tasted.

It has a great salty taste and makes a good alternative to sodium in many dishes. I like it on my salads, added to my soups and I sometimes even use it for meats.

Made with fresh anchovies, it's a great choice.

- Risa Caudill

Smelly but good

This fish sauce has a very strong smell and may be off-putting to the novice. However, once you get past the smell you will be delighted with the taste.

This fish sauce adds great flavor to meals, and it also adds all the slat you'll need. I also love that it isn't too runny and it isn't too think. It's the perfect consistency to stay where you want it on your dish.

- Stephen Spurrier

Not bad, not the best

Red Boat Fish Sauce is good, but not the best. I was slightly disappointed in the flavor. This sauce seemed a bit thin with less fish and more water. I liked the fact this sauces has only two ingredients and works well in a number of dishes.
I will try this sauce again. It could have been my recipe.
