Can I Substitute Applesauce In Baking?

Last Update: September 28, 2022

Unsweetened applesauce makes a great substitute for oil, butter and even eggs in baking recipes.

This is an especially easy way to make a recipe vegan. To substitute applesauce for butter or oil, use the same amount of applesauce as you would the original ingredients. To substitute applesauce for eggs, use 1/4 cup of applesauce for every large egg required.

Applesauce gives baked goods a fluffy, spongy texture, and makes very little change to the flavor. Just be sure to use an unsweetened, unflavored applesauce for best results.
